Paid Time Off from work. How is yours awarded?

I am curious about the number of days your employer awards as paid time off each year. Our company is currently being bought out and the new owners are suggesting they may cut our PTO time as it's "much" too generous and not in line with most companies.

Are your PTO and sick days separate, or the same? Our current system lumps all our paid time of together so you can use it how you need.

Ours is a ramping system where new employees get 15 days (3 weeks) per year, ramping up to 5+ years of service where you are awarded between 25-28 days (5-5.5 weeks) per year. I've been with the company six years so I am maxing out yearly PTO. They are considering capping us at 18 days.

We also get 6 paid holidays per year.

Tell me how your employer treats and awards PTO.

I enjoy the offseason and the life event threads here at CP.

Thanks.

I've never had to ask or check on PTO, other than notifying my boss when I'm taking vacation. I set my own schedule and take time off when I need/want it.

It's pretty amazing.

Before I retired I was getting 39 paid days off a year.

Bad part was my job was a 24x7x365 function and I was ALWAYS on duty. While my people did their best to not bug me when off, often there was just no way around it.

Just thinking about that reminds me how much I appreciate retirement.

Sick days can be either be carried over or paid out at 50%. Unused vacation time is paid out. I think the floating holiday we're given just goes away, but I always use it.

Mine starts at 18 PTO, 23 at 5 years, 28 at 10 years. Honestly, it's a crazy ton of time. My last place was 10, 15, and 20 at the same intervals but also gave 7 days of sick a year. PTO is better because you don't have as many callouts, people just request the time they want.

I currently get 5 weeks and 4 days of vacation each year, plus holidays. In a couple of more years I get another week of vacation because it will be my 25th year with them. We don’t get sick time, and you get something put in your file if you ever call in sick. I believe new hires start off by getting a week and a half of vacation after 6 months and another week after a year.

Years ago I worked for a British law firm. When they first opened the Chicago office, they started everybody at six weeks vacation, which apparently was standard for their London office. Fairly quickly the local attorneys got that knocked down to four weeks (six weeks for everybody was way too much vacation time for a small staff), but the people who were initially hired were able to keep the whole six weeks. Even starting people at four weeks in a small office was too much.

Seemed like the people in the London office were off every other day - in addition to the extra vacation time, they had more paid holidays. I still don't know how they ever got anything done.

They sure worked us like dogs in the Chicago office, though. Felt like I was back in the Navy sometimes. But at least their overtime was paid.

That’s brutal to get a write up for a call in. I’d understand if someone was abusing it.

1-5 years is 2 weeks vacation, 10 days sick. Year 1 is prorated.

At 5 years, 3 weeks vacation. At 15, maxes out at 4 weeks vacation.

It's all use it or lose it, no carry over.

In the service, you have to go to sick call, and unless you're bleeding out of your eyes, that usually meant waiting an hour and a half, then being given two motrin by the corpsman on duty and sent back to work.
