I've been wrong many times, but I'm going with duped + shamelessly took advantage of the media's interest in her death, or duped + too embarrassed to admit to his family and everyone that he never actually met her.

This is what it is looking like to me, which unfortunately for Te'o, makes him a dumbass and a liar.

I think his point is that the Catholic church and Catholic institutions have a history of trying to handle scandals internally which has bitten them in the ass in the past, and that one would think that they'd strive for more transparency to avoid the sort of reaction that the poster gave of "****ing catholics."

I can understand why they would in this situation particularly if they believe MT which it seems by all indications that they do. What is to be gained for ND by going public?

I don't see the embarrassment for MT or the school being markedly different if they got out in front of it or not. If they fluke it up and it never gets out they save face for a kid that by all accounts is well liked by everyone that knows him.

If you thought your star player was involved in an extortion plot, or some plot to create an NCAA violation, why not report it to the appropriate authority? Why not release your findings if Teo is the victim?

B/C it's really embarrassing and humiliating for the kid? He's a freaking laughingstock now. Unless he ends up being the next Ray Lewis in the pros he'll never live this down.

In the Deadspin article, reporters Timothy Burke and Jack Dickey write that a woman named Donna Tei reached out to Schulman after she discovered someone involved with Kekua was using her pictures, a fact Schulman confirmed to MTV News.
"Someone tweeted at me, because she was trying to get ahold of me to help her with something related to her image being used in some kind of 'Catfish' hoax," he said. And, having just heard of the story, I went into my 'Catfish' email account, and I have an email from this said person from December that I had not seen, where she does ask for help in regards to someone who was using her picture to create a fake profile. So there's definitely a connection, and this person obviously knows of me and the show and was making an effort to somehow get to the bottom of this."
