I r teh excite. I was let down with City, thought there were too many side quests and not enough main story. Loved Asylum though. I'm always a sucker for a good comic book game. I loved Troy Baker playing Joel in Last of Us, I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do with the Joker role in this one.

I loved Arkham City and the CGI trailer that dropped with Bats fighting Deathstroke was a masterpiece..

But nothing else I've seen from this game makes me excited.

I thought it was a bad sign that all reviews were embargoed until today. What I've read so far is confirming that. Lots of 7-8ish scores, "decent but not great".

Now I feel better about waiting for the price drops on it.

MOTHER **** THIS GAME.

Seriously, what the actual ****, Warner Brothers?

I cant even get the goddamn game to play for about 25 minutes because something to do with the WB servers has to happen before the ****ing title screen will advance.

I get stuck with WBID on the screen and busy.... at the bottom for several minutes before the game just pauses on one screen and never moves. The music keeps playing and the dashboard function works, but something is jacked with this piece of shit.

Then I finally get to play, and during an interrogation part of a random thug, which happens hundreds of times in Arkham City without issue, the ****ing game locks up. I have to dashboard, and now Im back on the mother ****ing title screen unable to start my game.

So lets recap my first impression of Arkham Origins.

30 minutes of bullshitting around with the title screen before I can even start, and after 15 minutes of gameplay it freezes and now Im back at the title screen again, unable to play the game.

WELL ****ING DONE, WB.

This is ****ing rich right here.

I cannot continue a saved game while connected to XBOX LIVE. Every time I click on my save file, I get WBID/busy... on an infinite loop.

If I click an empty file, WBID/busy... flashes for about a half second and then advances to the main title screen and then gives a message that WBID servers are not available.

I had to completely disconnect from the internet with my console in order to load up my previous save.

This is by far the worst first impression Ive gotten from any game that I can remember. So far in about 3 hours of actual gameplay once I disconnected from LIVE, Ive had the damn thing freeze about 6 times.

Again on the interrogation sequence I had before, once before a cutscene, and FOUR TIMES directly after I selected an upgrade after leveling up.

Not sure what the hell happened in the Q/A testing, but this first bit of the game has been a dumpster fire.

Still not sure if I can play while connected to LIVE. I shut it down for the evening and reconnected to LIVE for Netflix use. Its pretty ****ing aggravating to have to completely disconnect from LIVE in order to get the damn thing to launch. I have no idea how Im supposed to access the online portions of this game. I guess when WB gets their shit straight, or works out a patch, Ill be able to play as normal.

Once you get past all the ****ing bullshit the game is actually pretty damn solid. It seems like the combat timing has been tweaked, and the fights with common thugs last a lot longer now. You can still wreck shit if you go on a tear, but it takes a lot more discipline now.

They changed the upgrade system as well, you now have to unlock things in order, to unlock things further down the chain.

For example, in Arkham City, I always took the combo boost stuff straight away so I could kick ass much faster and get my takedowns after five hits. So far, it looks like I wont be able to unlock that until I hit at least level 12, and that is if I put every single point into close combat.

Now you have to hit those 8 string combos to get a takedown, and you don't get those brutal critical hits as early, so while the mechanics and system are the same, Batman still feels weaker and the fights last longer as they should, as he is supposed to be a rookie Batman in this title.

It keeps the fights engaging, and now I find myself in points where Im kinda sweating the number of enemies coming at me because they are taking so long to take out.

Hopefully this freezing bullshit gets worked out, and WB does something with that ****ing title screen. That is just un-****ing-acceptable that a single player game wont even launch because WB's servers are jacked.

Had a much, MUCH smoother experience with the game today. No more WBID hangups, and also no more freezes.

Previous bullshit aside, this is turning out to be a kick-ass Batman title.

It has Rocksteady's fingerprints all over it in a lot of places though. There are several sequences that are almost carbon copies of experiences that I had in Arkham City. Still good, but its pretty glaring when you experience them.

Here's a few examples.

Spoiler!

The freeze grenade and all of its uses (stopping steam valves, creating rafts, immobilizing enemies) is recreated but this game calls it the Glue Grenade.

Titan Thugs are replaced with big guys called Enforcers that do very similar attacks that the Titans did, but they are smaller and you don't ride them around. Ultra stun+beatdown into a scripted finisher.

However, despite this stuff, there is quite a bit of original content and the story itself is very good. There is also a seriously badass twist revealed pretty early on that just takes the game to another level, at least for me it did.

The fight timing is different because Bats is way slower in this one. It used to be 3 hits you could land before needing to counter someone, and in this one its only one, sometimes 2 before you get clocked.

The seemingly cheap "slide" that the enemies would do where they covered a big distance to land a hit on you in AC is present with ALL enemies in this one. You really have to play a lot more defensively in this game than in Arkham City.

Im guessing this was by design, since Bruce has only been Batman for a couple years, and he's only ever messed with mobsters and low level thugs to this point.

So while keeping all the moves, abilities, and gadgets from the last game, they still managed to make Bats feel like a rookie. Once you hit about level 15 though, you can finally unlock that takedown after five hits instead of 8, and later on you can get the criticals that do twice the damage and you start to feel more like the badass from Arkham City.

This one introduces some new stuff, the shock gloves are pretty sweet, once you land enough hits, the gloves get charged and you can activate them for a short time, and it allows you to attack any enemy head on. Armored, Shielded, Stun Baton, whatever. Really cool addition.

I haven't unlocked them yet, but there are several counters tied to the shock gloves that you can get that will allow you to counter previously uncounterable attacks, like the Shield Bash, and Stun Baton attack.

Pretty solid game once it gets rolling.

I just finished it and I really enjoyed it.

Positives:

The Story. I love origin stories and even though this doesn't fall under that it still is a setting up of the Arkham Storyline. It sets up Batman's knowledge of the mainstay villains IE Bane, Joker, Harley Quinn, etc as well as his relationship with Alfred, Oracle, and Jim Gordon. The script can get hammy at times, but it delivers on it's big action sequences and keeps the story moving forward instead of having huge drop offs like Arkham City did for me.

Voice Acting. Obviously Troy Baker as Joker was the big highlight of it all. He's no Mark Hamill, but that's not a bad thing. He did well at making the character his own and the game already had too many similarities from the other two games so to have some new things was the right thing to do.

Boss Battles. They were fun. Sure you could figure them out quickly, but they were more engaging than the previous two games. The Firefly fight, Bane's encounters, they were overall pretty good.

Negatives.

Arkham City with a new story. It was very similar, but I enjoyed all the things that this game copied so it's a small gripe for me. I was so engaged in the story that it just seemed like an expansion more than anything to me.

Wasted Villains.
Spoiler!

Overall I give it an 8/10, same as Arkham City. I still think Arkham Asylum is the best of the bunch.

More freezing issues on my last session.

I strongly advise backing up your current save to a flash drive, or to the cloud before you start playing, and then once again when you finish.

All it takes is for one of those freezes to happen during an auto-save and your file is trashed.

Quite honestly, the technical issues Im having with the game are what holds it back from being truly great. I remember Arkham City having the one big bug where it wouldn't load up at all if you were signed in to XBOX LIVE for the longest time. Had to go offline, launch the game, and then sign in after.

This game though, whew. Brutal. Im just constantly on edge, wondering if I should exit the game and back up my save file after Ive made a bit of progress because Im so dreadfully afraid of an untimely freeze corrupting my entire file.

I had another issue last night where I had to restart to get it to work right. I did some challenges in the batcave, and switched my costume up when I did it. When I got back to the batcave, I was in my original costume and when I pulled up the Batsuit Chamber, all I got was some weird coding underneath the original batsuit avatar, and I couldn't scroll down to my other suits.

All in all, this game could have used another month of testing and polishing up to get the kinks out. They easily could've justified a Christmas release, given that the time period of the story is Christmas Eve.

When its working, and running smoothly, the game is really fun.

If I had to sum it up, its like if Rocksteady were a band, then Arkham City was their biggest hit and Warner Brothers is a cover band performing the same song and not quite doing enough to make it really stand out as their own.
