Not a rumor: Ryan Lilja may be returning to KC

EDIT: No longer a rumor. The Chiefs have reportedly reached out to Lilja.

We're three deep at guard, however. If this is true, I think this portends ugly things for Rodney Hudson's recovery. I think the Chiefs may be angling for a patch at center.

The Return of Ryan Lilja?
posted by The Gentry
Apr 06, 2013

I've never had inside information before, but today I do. It's weird - and it was from out of the blue today - but I have it on good authority that Ryan Lilja is negotiating with the Chiefs to return for the 2013 season. That isn't to say that he would make the cut for the active roster after training camp, but I'd say he's got a damn good shot at that. What would you think to have Lilja back in the fold?
— I ain't saying, cause if I do someone's gonna get mad

Double damn. Was really hopeful about Hudson and no fan of Labjia...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

The Chiefs are probably thinking about a lineup of this:

Albert
Lilja
Hudson
Asamoah
Schwartz

Which... is not too far off from last year's starters.

If anything, they're not comfortable just giving the starting job to Allen at LG. I sure as hell wouldn't.

This.

This doesn't mean shit about Hudson, just means we need to find a b/u center and they like Lilja.

Or it means they think Allen is a disaster at LG and they want some depth there.

Looking back it wouldn't have been all bad if we "reached" for Decastro last year.

I bet that Hudson is ok, & that this is to have bodies and competition for camp. I don't think this has anything to do with their plans for the draft.

Yeah you're right. A handful of games is waaaaay too long to wait.

If they aren't Pro Bowlers in their first few games, we should just cut them.

No, but if the Chiefs are begging a veteran to come out of retirement for another season, they have to have a selling point that makes it worth his while to come back

why would he come back unless they, the FO, said look we have a need at ___, we evaluated the players on the o-line and some of them arent where we'd like them to be. We have a almost 30 year old QB we traded for that we need to protect and we cant go into the season with a bunch of unproven guys. Please help

This is no different than signing Fasano at TE, Avery at WR, Dunta CB. They needed veteran help at certain positions, cause they clearly dont like the unproven lack of production that is there, until proven otherwise, and dont have time to go into a season with said question marks, it's not the Raiders or the Jaguars that plan to field entire offenses and defenses of unproven players.

I could see all these guys if we were rebuilding with a rookie QB, but they dont have to time to wait into year 3 or 4 of the Jeff Allen project. Or find out if Rodney Hudson can play a full season. Or see of Donald Stephenson can handle his own
