Thank you! That's the 2nd time I've missed connections with an actor's prior work. Guess I don't watch enough TV.

I'm about done with the show.

The show needs continuity. I read that it is a repeat tonight, followed by one new episode next week and then 2 or 3 repeats again. One new episode a month? Screw that.

luckily for me, during the month of re-runs, I'll be in another country on vacation, so I won't be sad about it

but that does suck that it'll be so long between new episodes, but that's what you get for being hooked on a TV show, you have to bow to the producer's whims

'Lost' Findings

EW senior writer Jeff Jensen solves the show! (Or so he thinks...) Disagree with him? Then post your own best guesses about the hatch, the Dharma Initiative, and other mysteries

Every month EW will turn to our shadowy operative inside the world of Lost for insight. Burn this when you're done. The truth is out there.

1. THE ISLAND: It's Alive!
Our theory of Lost begins with the question posed in the pilot by smack-addled rocker Charlie: ''Guys...where are we?'' Some have argued that the island could be a hallucination — ''A Psychological Shipwreck,'' to use the title of an 1879 short story by Lost-linked author Ambrose Bierce. Or an alien twilight zone. It's tempting to go with ''limbo'' — an elastic enough idea to corral the show's incredible coincidences and odd details, like a smoke monster and a band of child-swiping Others. But we believe the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 aren't stuck in a mass delusion or a satanic mousetrap. They're alive on the island. A haunted island. And it was made that way by the Dharma Initiative.

2. THE DHARMA INITIATIVE: Head Games
What we know about Dharma is incomplete at best, utterly bogus at worst. According to a choppy ''orientation film'' found in the hatch, Dharma founders Gerald and Karen DeGroot established a research facility on the island in the 1970s to conduct experiments in meteorology, zoology, electromagnetism, psychology, and parapsychology — a dubious science that believes the brain houses mind-over-matter powers. (Think X-Men, Jedi Knights, and sci-fi author Robert Heinlein, whose 1941 short story Lost Legacy is about kids realizing their psychic potential under the tutelage of — COINCIDENCE ALERT! — Ambrose Bierce.) Our theory is that intentionally or not, the Dharma team pulled loose psychic powers from one of its test subjects — skip to No. 5 for the answer about who that might be — with disastrous results. How? With fear. Where? Where else, down in...

3. THE HATCH: Human Testing
The orientation film claims the hatch was originally used to study the island's ''unique'' electromagnetic energy. And indeed, there is a curious wall that seems to be humming with the stuff. But the filmstrip also states that the DeGroots were following B.F. Skinner, a psychologist famous for his Skinner boxes: controlled environments used to study animal behavior. Folks, the hatch is a human Skinner box.

Why wasn't this mentioned in the orientation film? Because the orientation film is part of the experiment! The film was fiction, designed to induce paranoia and fear and observe the test subject's reaction. What Dharma was studying was the behavior every Lost fanatic engages in: the human imperative to organize seemingly random details into some kind of order. The problem is that someone — someone we haven't seen or met yet — was put in the hatch and had a psychic break of world-altering proportions.

4. THE NUMBERS: Those Damn Yankees!
It has been Lost's most baffling conundrum: the seemingly inexplicable connection between Hurley's havoc-causing Lotto picks — 4 8 15 16 23 42 — and the hatch's computer code. This is a two-part riddle. First, the original purpose of the numbers: Skinner box experiments require test subjects to execute empty tasks, like pulling levers or, say, inputting digits into a computer. The Dharma-ites chose the sequence because...they were big Yankee fans, and each number correlates to a retired Yankee jersey. But the second question is far more important: What purpose do the numbers serve now? There are lots of out-there (and fun) ways to go with this, but the truth is that the numbers don't do anything. The ''cursed'' digits are just one more sinister detail in Dharma's elaborate sleight of hand intended to freak out test subjects. The problem was that extreme stress on the subject in the hatch combined with the electromagnetic energy down there to jar loose some suppressed psychic powers. And it jarred them loose in the wrong individual. In that explosive moment, the once meaningless digits were encoded with devilish life. Hence, Hurley's bad luck, and a virus that is rewriting reality on the island.

5. THE ANSWER TO 'LOST': The Island Is Haunted by a Powerful Psychic
The Dharma experiments resulted in the creation of a potent disembodied being. A being deeply steeped in pop culture — think about all the novels, comic books, and random flotsam that make up the DNA of Lost — and powerful enough to bring those bits of pop culture to life. Someone who imprinted his consciousness on the island. Someone whose radioactive corpse was walled up in the hatch. Someone named Aaron.

So how did the Oceanic crew end up on the island? Aaron summoned them, because he has as-yet-undetermined uses for each of them...and he needed a new body. The body of a then-unborn baby. Claire's baby. Which is why the Others (Aaron's followers) have tried to kidnap her child. And why they had to snatch poor, psychic Walt — remember that dead bird from season 1? — who was the only one with the ability to see through their plan.

Of course, the castaways could all be dead. It could be a mass hallucination. The Others could be trying to secure franchise rights to the Twilight Zone Dairy Queen. But this is our story, and we're sticking to it. At least until the start of the next episode.

The Buddhism of `Lost'

By Maureen Ryan
Published February 19, 2006

There are a million theories about "Lost." That's one of the show's key strengths: Just about every fan of the show has his or her own idea about what's transpiring on that mysterious island, and events on "Lost" can be interpreted to support as many theories as viewers can come up with.

But this season, a truly compelling explanation of the island happenings has emerged: Episodes aired in the fall revealed that the island is an experiment run by a collective known as the Dharma Initiative. Dharma is the word used to describe the collected teachings of the Buddha.

"What's going on here? Is mainstream TV really making a meaningful foray into the Buddhist world? Or is it merely rummaging through the thrift store of Buddhist terminology for the odd hat or trinket with which to play dress up?" Dean Sluyter writes in the current issue of the Buddhist magazine Tricycle. There's reason for Sluyter's wariness; he notes that the last time the word "dharma" was prominently mentioned on TV, "it turned out to mean a cute blond hippie girl married to an uptight yuppie named Greg."

But Sluyter noted other Buddhism-related clues in the show: The computer that must be tended to every 108 minutes may be a reference to the 108-bead string, or mala, that some Buddhist practitioners use during meditation.

And he sees John Locke, the enigmatic character played by Terry O'Quinn, as a man with a lot of relevance to Buddhism: "Thanks to O'Quinn's gravitas, when flashbacks reveal Locke as a loser," Sluyter writes, "we accept his emergence in the forward action as the macho paramilitary survivalist of his own dreams, the warrior-sage who may well prove to be the salvation of his people. Yes, even schmendricks like us may rise to be bodhisattvas," or enlightened beings.

An ABC publicist said that neither of the show's main day-to-day executive producers, Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, is a Buddhist. Still, Sluyter notes in his piece that, aside from tossing about words such as dharma, the show does address core issues that sound familiar to anyone on the Buddhist path.

"To be lost is to be stripped of the cozy but confining assurance that you're on course, on a tidy, logical trajectory from Point A to Point B," he writes. "If you're really going somewhere new (toward enlightenment, let's say), any concept you have of the destination or the path" that you'll end up on "is necessarily an ignorant concept."

"Whenever we practice" Buddhist concepts such as meditation and mindfulness, Sluyter concludes, "we must be willing to get lost, to cast off the moorings of what we know or think we know."

'LOST' ON MYSTERIOUS ISLE

TV's latest phenom is awash with theories, questions and very few answers

By PHIL KLOER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 02/19/2006
It's not just Jack and Kate and Mr. Eko who are "Lost."

It's everyone who watches ABC's addictive TV series, which has moved past mere hit to flat-out phenomenon. And the more you watch, or think about it — or if you're really nuts, the more hours you spend trolling the Internet trying to figure it out — the more lost you are.

Like Seth Miller of Smyrna. Every week that there's a new episode (9 p.m. Wednesdays), Miller, 29, takes notes on the show. As soon as it's over, he posts his theories and observations on his Web log, www.mostlymuppet.com.

"It really challenges you," he says. "Part of the fun of the show is who can come up with the craziest theories or connect the weirdest dots or find the double meanings."

At its simplest level, "Lost" is about several dozen survivors (sometimes called "Lostaways") of a plane crash on a tropical island where the laws of reality have gone off the rails. We don't know what is and isn't a clue, or what is and isn't significant to the big picture: The polar bear? The lottery numbers? The logo on the shark? The Dharma Initiative?

In an attempt to hack through the jungle of the show's mythology, we offer the "Lost" Lists, a partial guide to the different ways the show has viewers hooked.

Significant names
1. John Locke. Named for the 17th-century English philosopher who wrote about the state of nature and the need for civilization to administer laws through a social contract, paralleling in some ways the character.
2. Rousseau. A crazy Frenchwoman on "Lost" and a famous French philosopher in history. Rousseau, like Locke, wrote about the need for a social contract to overcome the brutality of our natural impulses.
3. Jack Shephard. The doctor looks after the Lostaways as if they were his flock of sheep; the name has a benevolent symbolism (although Jack's need to save everyone is portrayed as a compulsion). His father was named Christian Shephard (Christ as shepherd), yet Christian (the dad) was a pretty nasty guy.
4. Aaron. Claire's baby, possibly named for Moses' brother. In the Old Testament, Aaron was instrumental in leading the Hebrews out of captivity in Egypt.
5. Mr. Eko. Possibly a homage to author Umberto Eco. Eco's 1995 novel, "The Island of the Day Before," is not much like "Lost" but does involve a shipwreck, survival issues, a character with a mysterious brother (like Mr. Eko) and confusion over what is real.

Father issues
Is it significant or just coincidence that so many of the Lostaways had serious problems with their fathers?
1. Fugitive Kate thought her father was her stepfather and killed him; he may have abused her.
2. Jack's father was an emotionally abusive alcoholic.
3. Locke's father conned him into donating a kidney, then rejected him.
4. Shannon's rich father died but didn't leave her any money.
5. Sawyer's father killed his mother, then committed suicide.
6. Walt's father, Michael, signed away his legal rights and didn't see the boy for nine years.
7. Baby Aaron's father (Claire's boyfriend) split before he was born.

The big picture: Theories
1. Purgatory/afterlife. They all died, and this is some form of afterlife. The producers have said this is not the case.
2. The Experiment. It's a social psychology experiment being run by the Dharma Initiative that went wrong, or something like that.
3. It's the End of the World as We Know It. Maybe the entire outside world was destroyed, and these people were brought here to start anew. By God? A cabal of scientists? Unknown forces?
4. Electromagnetism mumbo jumbo. Some science-minded fans think electromagnetism is the key to a lot. There's something to this, but a lot of the Internet discussions will make your head hurt.
5. Time/space/dimension jump. The flight may have started in Australia in 2005, but there's been nothing to indicate events on the island are happening in our world, in the present time. "Lost" is a sealed, self-referential world.
6. It's all the dream of one character. No way. If this turns out to be the case, the outcry will be deafening.

Unsolved mysteries
When it's all over, these had better be explained:
1. How everybody is connected.
2. Where the island really is.
3. The polar bear.
4. How Locke can walk after being in a wheelchair.
5. The lottery numbers.
6. Exactly how the pilot (of the plane) was killed in the pilot (episode).
7. Why Hurley doesn't lose weight, week after week.
8. The monster or monsters, aka "Lostzilla."

Lostaways who killed someone
1. Sayid
2. Mr. Eko
3. Ana Lucia
4. Jack
5. Charlie
6. Sawyer
7. Kate

Recurring motifs
1. Eyes. Many episodes open with an extreme close-up of an eye. Locke said he had looked into the eye of the island. Etc.
2. Games. Kate and Jack played golf, Walt and Locke played backgammon, Kate and Sawyer played the drinking game "I Never," Locke played Risk in a flashback. Maybe the whole thing is one big game. Discuss.
3. Leg injuries. Locke was a paraplegic before the island healed him. Boone's leg is crushed when the plane falls out of the tree. Jack's wife almost was a paraplegic after her car crash. Michael hurt his leg badly before he was on the island. And so on.

Those weird whispers
Transcriptions are supplied by fans who record the jungle whispers, analyze them and post them on the Net. Believe 'em or don't.
1. Before Ana Lucia shoots Shannon: "Shannon, she likes the guy, she likes the guy. Shannon, your life and time is up. Help me. Meet me on the other side. Her song. ... I don't think you should tell her when she comes ... Who's the guy? Fire Lucia. The brothers that help us. Are you done with it? Her song."
2. When Ana Lucia and Mr. Eko are in the jungle: "Who's this in the woods? Sawyer, Ana. I'm in someone's dream. Ich weiss nicht (German for "I don't know"). She's heavy. Black rock. Bring the boy."

Back story connections
1. Hurley owned the box company Locke worked for.
2. Shannon's father was in the SUV that hit Sarah, the woman who became Jack's wife. Jack chose to save Sarah's life in the ER, and Shannon's father died as a result.
3. Jack's dad met Sawyer in a bar, and they exchanged philosophies.
4. At least twice, one character appears on a TV set in the background during another Lostaway's back story. (Hurley appears in Jin's story, and Sayid appears in Kate's story.)
5. Kate's waitress mom served Sawyer in a diner.

'Lost' tunes
1. "Make Your Own Kind of Music" by "Mama Cass" Elliott. Played in the Season 2 opener inside the hatch.
2. "La Mer." Sung by now-dead-character Shannon. It's best known in its English version "Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin and others. The lyrics were also written on a map of the island.
3. "I Shall Not Walk Alone" by the Blind Boys of Alabama, played over the final scene in a first season episode about Sawyer.
4. "Walkin' After Midnight" by Patsy Cline. Kate played it on the turntable in the hatch.
5. "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley. Sawyer sang a few lines when he was on the raft trying to escape.
6. "You All Everybody" by Drive Shaft. Charlie's fictional rock band's one big hit, it's come up several times.

The 'Lost' Library: Extracurricular reading
1. "The Third Policeman" by Flann O'Brien, an obscure Irish surrealist, shown briefly in Desmond's belongings in the hatch. The book is very strange with possible but tenuous connections to "Lost." Plus, the hero turns out to be dead, adding fuel for the (discredited?) theory they're all dead.
2. "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Bierce. A short story in which reality is really a fantasy of a man who is dying. Major clue, said some when it popped up. Nah, the writers are messing with us, said others.
3. The Bible. Mr. Eko found one on the island that turned out to contain a piece of film; in a later episode, he recites the 23rd Psalm.
4. "A Wrinkle in Time," the classic children's sci-fi novel by Madeleine L'Engle, and "Watership Down" by Richard Adams. Sawyer was seen reading both; significance unclear.
5. "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad and "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding have been referred to in dialogue.
6. Fans think a number of books have partly inspired "Lost," including "The Stand" by Stephen King, "The Island of the Day Before" by Umberto Eco and "Mysterious Island" by Jules Verne.

The Ultimate Lost Theory (in brief-ish)
Feb. 18, 2006. 01:00 AM
MALENE ARPE

Of all the hundreds of theories on the web that aim to explain the intrigues of Lost, this one caught our eye as the most complex, inventive and somehow believable.

A lengthy and illustrated explanation appears at http://tinyurl.com/9r883.

In an email exchange, we contacted "theorist" Andrew Smith of Northhampton, England. Smith is a graphic designer who loves Lost because of "the broad and excellent cast of characters, the usual love triangles, the production values, the soundtrack that holds the drama together and the way it pretends NOT to be sci-fi — so it's okay to like it and not feel like a geek."

Smith's theory is based on actual science, primarily the works of two scientists: Nobel Prize winner Hannes Alfvén, who worked with electromagnetism and was interested in the "green flash," a phenomenon that sometimes occurs at sunset; and Hans Oersted, who discovered electromagnetism in 1820.

Alfvén plus Hans O. equals Alvar Hanso, founder of Lost's "Dharma Initiative." Voila.

Here, in Smith's own words, is his theory:

"Our heroes were brought back to the island of their birth to continue a project which began in secret back in 1968. The Dharma Initiative — a group of scientists funded by Hanso (an ex-arms-dealer-turned-pacifist) — was set up to develop a weapon that would halt the arms race and the madness of mutually assured destruction at the height of the Cold War.

"The project was sabotaged and much of it was disbanded by the U.S. Army, but not before the children were sent out into the world undetected and the weapon was sealed behind concrete in the hatch.

"The weapon that Dharma had developed — the Collective Consciousness — uses electromagnetism to control objects and to induce visions in vulnerable minds. The CC is a few scientists with wires attached to their heads. The ultimate aim of the CC was eventually realized: with the effect of a massive EMP (electromagnetic pulse) bomb, the CC destroyed electrical equipment the world over."

Are you with him thus far? "The world would assume it was a natural disaster — a polar reversal — as anticipated by the Oersted satellite in '99. The result would be to permanently set technology back a hundred years, before WMDs. The plane never actually crashed. They were given a rollercoaster ride by the CC, and then knocked out. When they came to on the island, it was some time (maybe years) later; debris had been flung around the island to make it look like a crash."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
`I imagined my brother being ... dropped into a car cruncher, which would then squash him into a cube'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember the compass not working on the island? The poles have switched.

With the technology hinted at in the Orientation film (and Hurley's comic), Smith believes, the CC scientists are able to remotely control objects, such as cars, galleons, planes and lottery balls, and are also able to induce visions in weakened minds, such as those that are drunk, drugged, exhausted or sick.

Smith posits that the Orientation film and what Desmond says is false and only meant to ensure the crashies type in the numbers every 108 minutes for three purposes: to provide a focus for the community, to protect the hatch/power-supply/scientists and to download information from the Oersted satellite.

Smith does not place any large significance on the numbers themselves: "The numbers that are input are intrinsically meaningless; more telling is the fact that the numbers get larger and that they total 108. The numbers getting larger suggests units of time; 108 minutes was the time it took astronaut Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin to orbit the earth....

"The purpose of the Dharma Initiative was world peace; its means were a number of defensive weapons to protect the island including the mechanical monster, sharks, the black fog and probably more stuff to come."

"They're back on the island to continue the Dharma project: Walt will eventually become part of the CC; Hurley will input the numbers for the rest of his life. The finale will be our heroes realizing all of these secrets — that their whole lives (their foster parents, their coincidences, their good/bad luck, their jobs, their disabilities and their travel plans) were engineered around this project. Some will choose to stay. Others will leave. The End!

"To summarize further still: Science is playing God in order to bring peace. But do the ends justify the means?"

Umm, wow. And you thought of this how?

"My theory stems from the scene where Locke is being dragged along the ground towards a hole," Smith continues. "It just so happens that my poor older brother has to wear iron calipers on his legs. Years ago, when he was getting on my nerves, I imagined him being picked up by a large electromagnet — the kind you get in dumps — and dropped into a car cruncher, which would then squash him into a cube.

"When I saw Locke being dragged along by his legs, I started to think about electromagnetism, etc. I realize this must sound quite weird, but I do love my brother and I am pretty normal."

Unraveling the mysteries, symbolism and hidden meanings in "Lost" has become great sport for many couch potatoes.

This confounding tale of survivors stranded on a strange island could have easily become just a cult favorite, but it's the biggest offbeat hit since "The X-Files."

The ultimate water-cooler series, ABC's "Lost," which airs at 9 p.m. Wednesdays, has a devoted fan base that spends hours online and on telephones with friends, family and co-workers analyzing each episode, looking for clues to what it all means.

Hundreds of Web sites are devoted to pondering every scene, character and plot development. Some theories are so deep you have to laugh.

For example, check out www.

4815162342.com for "The Ultimate Theory." This proposes that the island where the survivors are stranded was part of an experiment by scientists who feared Earth's magnetic field was in danger of reversal.

Apparently, a rip in the "electrosphere" would have cataclysmic effects like those described in "Ghostbusters."

You know: "A disaster of biblical proportion. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies, rivers and seas boiling, 40 years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes, human sacrifice."

In addition, "DOGS AND CATS living together - mass hysteria!"

We're more than halfway through the second season, and the mystery of "Lost" has only gotten thicker and more convoluted.

And it's only going to get more muddled. After looking back over this season's episodes and studying several of the fan Web sites - and listening to co-workers endlessly discuss what's going to happen next - I had a vision of future episodes.

I'm sure it wasn't a flashback because there was nothing about my past involved.

I can't be 100 percent certain, but I think we might see the following:

Socrates Redux: Hurley and Charlie discover a deep canyon filled with mismatched socks. Meanwhile, Locke finds another fragment of a tape from the Dharma project. It discloses that scientists were pursuing a theory that a wormhole connects all the washers and dryers in the world.

Out of Time: The Frenchwoman returns and leads Jack to what appears to be a diary that belonged to Amelia Earhart. On another part of the island, Jack finds what appears to be a satchel belonging to D.B Cooper.

Meanwhile, back down the hatch, Locke discovers 18 minutes of audiotape in an envelope marked "Rosemary Woods."

A Three-Hour Tour: In a flashback, we learn that as a child Hurley was fascinated by reruns of "Gilligan's Island," and his lucky numbers - 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 - add up to the exact number of times the Skipper said "Little Buddy."

Meanwhile, back down the hatch, Locke is shown reading "The Complete Adventures of Curious George" (a moment guaranteed to send millions of fans to chat rooms).

Goodbye, Oz: Fed up with Charlie, the castaways finally banish him from their spot on the island. Jack realizes he has been on the island too long when Sawyer starts looking good to him.

Meanwhile, down in the hatch, Locke plays a CD of Charlie's band, DriveShaft, backward and discovers it means absolutely nothing.

In the jungle, Charlie finds red shoes, tries them on, clicks his heels and disappears.

"COMMANDER IN CHIEF": In a sudden move, ABC yanked "Commander in Chief" from its Tuesday night schedule, replacing it with reruns of "According to Jim" and "George Lopez."

The political drama starring Geena Davis is scheduled to return April 18.

The sitcom reruns will continue until March 7, when a short-run comedy, "Sons & Daughters," will fill the 9 p.m. slot on Tuesdays.

"Commander in Chief" has not been canceled and will return for seven episodes, ABC officials say

Interesting theories indeed... but, I think #1689 is the most likely to be true.

Q. What is the significance of the individual numbers of the satellite code number: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42?
A. There is no intrinsic significance of the numbers beyond the show. They are not an obscure occult reference or have any scientific/mathematical relevance whatsoever. They are the passcode that stops the satellite from zapping the hatch - the security system to protect the island and its secrets. Within the realms of me making things up about Lost: the fact that the numbers get larger suggests arithmetic progression; the numbers are minutes adding up to 108 minutes (the time it takes the satellite to orbit the earth); the satellite is asked to perform a task at 4 minutes, then 8 minutes later, then 15 minutes later and so on, but what that is probably doesn't matter.

This is pretty deep. So a satellite in orbit passes directly over the island every 108 minutes. It is instructed to perform 'tasks' at time intervals of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42 minutes during it's orbit. Wonder what geographic points of the globe the satellite might pass over at these intervals? Specific global regions of power, to support information gathering or electromagnetic disruption tasks for the world peace initiative.

So say they are on an island in the pacific, which seem a reasonable guess, then the 4 and 12 minute marks of orbit could be west/east coast north america.

4 = West coast N.A.(L.A./Seattle/Silicon Valley)
12(4+8) = East coast N.A.(Washington D.C./NYC)
27(4+8+15) = Western Europe(London/Paris, perhaps Berlin)
43(4+8+15+16) = Moscow/Middle East
66(4+8+15+16+23) = Bejing/Tokyo
108(4+8+15+16+23+42) = LOST Island.
