If not #1, where?

The draftniks keep saying that Geno Smith isn't worth the #1 pick.
None of them say he isn't the top QB in the class though.
If we don't take him at #1 how far is he realistically going to fall?

I see no scenario where he falls out of the Top 10.

So if he's the top QB in a weak class...
QB is our biggest need...
And he's gonna go Top 10 anyway...

Why not at #1?

Am I wrong to say he won't fall out of the Top 10?

Discuss...

I wasn't all that high on Bradford when he came out, and would not take him ahead of Smith or Wilson, and probably not ahead of Barkley.

I thought that Bradford was a complete joke at #1 overall. He spent his college career in the spread and was injured for a year. I thought he'd be an awful NFL QB.

He's a case where you'd expect a team to fall in love with his arm, build, talent, etc, despite whatever flaws he has, and take a chance that they can mold him however they want. You can't coach his physical attributes. For a team that wanted to attack vertically, wanted a gunslinger, he would've been the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I thought he needed another year, personally. But I also would have been thrilled had the Chiefs taken him or traded up for him.

(he only threw 10 picks in '08, you must've seen the bad games - that Georgia offense was a bit weird back then as I recall - I think he was basically chucking it downfield whenever he threw. It was pro style, but not much in the way of short or intermediate stuff. assuming i'm remembering it right. which I may not be).

I just can't really figure them taking Joeckel. New GM's and HC's mean new QB's. Best place to find a good QB, percentage wise, is early in the first round.

I think we're working ourself up, before we even know whats gonna happen.

I wouldn't touch Wilson due to his concussion history. It's been reported that he suffered two in college, so I think it's fair to assume that he's suffered from even more.

With the league cracking down on the availability of players due to concussions, there's no way I'd touch him with a first round pick.

It seems alot of these strong armed guys, struggle with the short intermediate stuff. They can't tone it down.

This appears to be my forte: Turn on the TV to watch celebrated college QB's, only to see them fall flat on their face.

Maybe I shouldn't watch The Combines.

Agree with that.

I also think for both Wilson and Smith, if you put them on USC, they just freaking light it up. Better line talent than either of them had (notable due to just how bad USC's line was) and by far better skill position talent than Wilson had this season (not Smith, obviously).

I still say if Smith's a 9-win QB he's on the stage for the Heisman ceremony, with the exact same stats he posted as a 7-win QB. That's how much I think those two one-point losses (which he'd put the team ahead late, as you know...) hurts how he's perceived. And there's likely no debate at all about his status on early draft boards.

It's weird, and I know it's bad juju around here to say, but with all the talk about QB's I wanted to see if we are all just wacko about this years class and maybe it is just shitty.

So I went back and watched some of Lucks tape from last years bowl game, some stuff from Matt Ryan at BC, and some Eli college. They made some really good throws, but there was some meh in there as well.

I didn't really realize how much these guys change from the collegiate level to the next. I know they get better coaching.

so i pretty much agree with everything you ever type

if WVU beats OU, which they should have, Smith has the brand name upset just like RG3 and resets the whole narrative about his season...instead, we end up with RunKC doing 'research' on youtube...

agree about Wilson and Smith at USC as well...I am torn on Barkley...have loved him since his frosh performance at Ohio St., loved him last year, then this year he just makes some really bad throws

i'd still take him, though, if that is what it comes down to

Luck was pretty much nothing short of amazing during his last two years of college football. There's really no argument there.

Matt Ryan played on a bad team with receivers that couldn't run routes. 90% of interceptions were due to that reason and the coach was fired shortly after Ryan graduated.

Eli played for a bad school because it's the school his father attended. Once again, less than average coaching coupled with weak talent made him appear "worse" than he was, even though he absolutely deserved to be the #1 overall pick.

As far as this class is concerned, I've seen very good and very bad from Barkley. I've only seen poor games from Smith. I saw an Arkansas game or two in 2011 in which Wilson was money, then saw him in 2012 when he wasn't even close.

I believe this is why the talking heads haven't pinpointed a single guy from this class: None of them really pass the casual eye test.

Hopefully, The Combine will provide answers.

Barkley's my #3 guy, but if that's who they went with, I'd be fine with it. I don't think he's really all that different than Matt Ryan when he came out of BC. Right situation (and a WCO team would be that) and he might thrive.

Barkley looks like a guy with a higher ceiling than Alex Smith, but that just puts him at the top of the list of game manager's with Sam Bradford.
