Nook allows you to check out books from the library and Kindle does not. That was HUGE in my decision. I also like the touch screen on the Nook over the physical keyboard on the Kindle.
the only thing I found better on Kindle was that it is a little bit lighter than the Nook.

I read about a pilot program for the Kindle with some college students and supposedlythe didn't care for it academically for the inability to mark in the books, organize bookmarks, etc. In addition the digital editions of books don't represent a cost saving over buying the textbooks used in a lot of cases. They loved it for pleasure reading but not as much for academic work. Just a few items to consider.
Kindle cannot read the EPUB format, which may or may not matter to you, but it's the format used by a lot of online libraries as I understand. They sell books in their own proprietary format. |

Oh, it is also much easier to change the batter in a Nook as the back is easily removable by design. Nook also allows you to install a micro SD memory card if you so choose.
chiefsnorth brings up a good point about the fact that Kindle is a proprietary format as well.

Kindle for library of books.
Nook for device (more or less). It's closer than it once was (Nook way ahead of Kindle).

screen size is exactly the same as Kindle. As far as PDF, yes it will view them but from what I hear, you can't expand the size of them. I don't really know since everything I have is EPUB.

Replaceable battery+easily add on storage=nook.
I have one and have been really pleased with it. The only thing I notice is that occasionally it will turn two pages instead of one, and the highlighting/note taking feature is functionally worthless. e-readers are much better for reading for enjoyment than reading for research.

Battery is not an issue since the Kindle lasts for a week without having to recharge it. But the added storage is a plus.
I need to make sure I can also view pdf files in different languages. Anyone tried it with a language other than English? |

Both are great devices. However, I am going to go with the new NOOKcolor. Its a hybrid eReader/Tablet. Runs $250 and is quite impressive.
Pros: Based on Android (2.1) 7" 16M color touch screen full color books, magazines & newspapers 802.11b/g/n wiFi 8gb storage (expandable to 40gb) media player ability to loan books to friends full web browser kids books in full color with "read to me" feature custom B&N Nook App Store coming in 2011. Cons: 8 hr battery life no 3G option no Android App Store access no camera (front or rear) no native email app (for now) Basically, they have done a marvelous job of brining together the best of both worlds. Excellent design, build quality and product support. Great color screen. Overall has the majority of the tablet market functionality but at a much more pleasing price point. It will not have the standard Android marketplace, but B&N will be launching a Nook Color app store in Q1 2011. Since the platform is Android 2.1, it will be very easy for developers to "optimize" their apps for the NookColor 7" screen and then submit to B&N store. For me, this gives me the full functionality of a proven eReader setup with an excellent library and better file support than the Kindle. It also gives the majority of what I would use a tablet for (web browsing) without the price of a tablet. Granted, it is lacking some features from the more expensive Galaxy Tab, but at $350 LESS than the Galaxy Tab, I cant see myself justifying the extra cost of the true tablet platform. I really think that if B&N markets this device well, they could have a dominant device on their hands!

It is when the battery craps out.

Some people obviously don't mind dropping down for a whole new unit when the battery goes bad. The rest of us like having the option of popping in a new battery for a much cheaper price.

Fair enough. However, if the battery will last 3 years before it goes out, I will be fine with replacing it with a newer device because by that time the actual device would have been obsolete anyway.
I might just end up buying a Nook if I somehow make sure that it can accept .PDF files and display right to left languages correctly. So far, the Kindle does that just fine. |
