Alex Smith is "the best in the league"

BY RANDY COVITZ
The Kansas City Star

There’s little question any success the Chiefs have this season hinges on how well quarterback Alex Smith performs.

The Chiefs paid a hefty price in acquiring Smith from San Francisco for a second-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft and a conditional second- or third-round pick in 2014.

Smith led San Francisco to the NFC championship game in 2011 and started the first nine games of the 49ers’ Super Bowl run a year ago, and Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson believes strongly in Smith.

“Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback,” Pederson said. “I think we have the best in the league.”

The best? Better than Peyton Manning … Tom Brady … Drew Brees … Joe Flacco … Matt Ryan … Eli Manning … Colin Kaepernick … ?

“There are a lot of great ones,” Pederson said, “but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done. He’s a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he’s experienced, he’s a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him.”

Heres a nice big bottle of **** yourself. Slow down, take your time drinking it, I want it to last a while.

I live in Wisconsin. Im married to a packer fan.....I know who the best qb in football is, and its not even close.
hah, the name is to help me figure out who the really creative geniuses are. Thank you though, I do practice for 8 miles every day.

I do appreciate the gift, but decorum insists I decline, even if you do only live in Wisconsin and you are married to a packer fan.

Now that we've gotten the serious bits out of the away, you're on chiefsplanet because of Alex Smith. Your initial avatar name was AlexSmithFan002488Csomething. You're sig says you're an Alex Smith supporter. You seriously expect me to believe that the player you clearly are very fond of is praised immoderately by his new OC, and that doesn't make you happy?

Irrational Reason #9 that I hate Alex Smith - Alex Smith molested my goat - and my goat is a Detroit Pistons fan that lives in Cambodia.

TFD: Alex Smith is the best QB in the NFL, says delusional Chiefs OC

There's confidence in your players and then there is this:

“Ultimately, every team has to have a quarterback,” Pederson said. “I think we have the best in the league.”

The. Best. In. The. League.
We presume Pederson at least didn't mean the best of all-time. After all, Pederson used to be Brett Favre's backup in Green Bay and Favre will surely have words for him if he says Smith tops the gunslinger.

Truthfully, I don't care either way. Maybe he does have that kind of confidence in Smith.

But remember the Vikings are the team that took Cassel. How is that working for ya?

Harbaugh came in and taught Alex to play safe football. This is well-documented. Alex was told that sacks are better than INTs, and a dump off on 3rd and 8 that picks up 5 yards is better than "forcing" something for a potential first down. This is the SAME WAY Harbaugh played football back in his days as a QB. Harbaugh knows it can work, and can win games, but he also knows it has its limits. In my opinion, this is precisely why Alex was so confused over the QB take-over. Because Kaepernick was going out there and taking risks and just playing football. The 49ers have a good enough TEAM that they can afford a QB to do that. It wasn't like the 2011 squad, where Alex's safe play was, really, the only way to win a game. Alex said, "I feel like the only thing I did to lose my job was get a concussion." In other words, Harbaugh never came up to Alex, at any point, and said, "Hey, we like the safe play... but we REALLY need you to take more deep shots." The truth is that... the SF offense was never really Alex's offense. Even when Harbaugh told him it was, that was likely a lie. The truth is that Harbaugh has been building this offense with Kaep in mind from the start; and he has been waiting, itching, CRAVING the day to put HIS GUY in. The Smith Era was ALWAYS MEANT to end, regardless of what Harbaugh might have said to Smith. Reid knows this -- which is why he keeps reiterating that he is going to let Alex "open things up" and "pull the trigger." Reid believes in Alex, I think; even more than Harbaugh did. Harbaugh simultaneously nurtured Alex in to a winning player while also holding him back. It's an odd paradox.

He's not going to be asked to play safe football, as already evidenced by TC.

We're going to throw the football and Alex Smith is going to be asked to be "the guy".

Sink or swim

He's going to be asked to play "put up some ****ing points and lets win this shit with the offense" football.

And frankly, after the past, however long, I'm 100 percent fine with that.

Nope, I'm not buying that. Not in the least. If Harbaugh and Greg Roman never turned Alex loose, then why did they turn him loose against the Bills?

They gave Alex every opportunity to duplicate that type of performance, but at the end of the day, Alex could not do it. He regressed against the Giants and couldn't find the open receivers against Seattle.

Chiefs fans can only pray that article is right, otherwise Andy Reid is in for a rude awakening when he learns about Alex what Jim Harbaugh already knows. You can't make Alex just turn off his over-analytical mind and wing it, putting a team on his back Colin Kaepernick style.

How dumb would Jim Harbaugh have to have been to go with a completely untested QB mid-year when he had a top-flight QB he could have hung his team on? Andy just has yet to learn what Jim Harbaugh already knows. Good luck wif dat.

Amazing that we finally have a staff that has the right mindset to win.

Marty was too conservative.
Gunter just sucked.
DV neglected the defense.
Herm was run first and didn't know offense.
Haley was a hothead amateur.
Romeo was using schemes from the 80's.

This is a pass first league. Glad we have a HC who plays to the players strengths and is very aggressive.

Love it that Andy wants to pass the ball around and use pass rushers to get pressure on the QB. This is exactly what the great teams do. The Giants and Steelers are perfect examples.

May Oscar Meyer's weiner find its way into your throat while nobody is around to grab you from behind and dislodge it.

Oh nevermind, there's no way a San Fran guy can have a weiner jammed down his throat without another guy around to grab him from behind.
