I've worked in both Marketing and Marketing Innovation. This mentality that they're discrete is exactly the reason why Apple succeeded while competitors failed. The core of marketing is about knowing who your customer is and then giving them what they want. Competitors built mp3s/phones/etc... that delighted the same geeks who developed the products. Apple built their products with the average consumer in mind, and they focused not just on the product, but on the whole user experience.

If you don't think iTunes was revolutionary, you should think back to how frustrating it was to load music onto competitive mp3 players. iTunes was the first software system to integrate everything about music into one platform. You could buy music, share music, build playlists... and then quickly transfer music to your iPod or someone else's. They took an old system and put a massive user facelift to it, something nobody else was doing.

The Treo didn't have wifi, media capability, or the multi-touch we used today (it was geared more toward styluses), and the enormous resolution fullscreens. Not to mention wifi access. It was the most integrated phone at the time by a longshot.

Well and when you have 150 employees at a time and 10,000 customers getting bad AR and employees pilfering is fairly low at 100 times in 30+ years. Yeah I don't even want to get into helping people out that are going to pay you back. Well you can't take money with you so just get busy and make a little more

Not really that funny. Revolutionary technology forces competition to one-up. I love my Droid a lot more than I do an iPhone, but it doesn't change the fact that Droid was created to one-up the iPhone.

I'd like to point out, I am not at all taking away from the many things he really did accomplish... but I just would like a little perspective on a bad person who did a number of things (I won't judge on whether they were good or bad...) but the one thing I KNOW (yes, there is that word again) he was NOT a good person... and no ****ing amount of diffusion or deflection on your part will ever change that FACT.

I really really don't care for Ford.. his cars or his humanity... (Inkster? really?) but if you honestly think Jobs had anywhere CLOSE the influence Ford had on the world than you are beyond piss ignorant...

Hamas has by far the best take on this in the entire thread... Jobs was the Giorgio Armani of tech. FORM far above function... but even I will admit... massively effective in marketing it as such.
