Chiefs agree to terms with 13 reserve/future free agents

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that the club had agreed to terms with 13 Reserve/Future Free Agents.

The list of players who agreed to terms of two-year contracts include: S Robb Butler, FB Greg Hanoian, DT Brian Howard, G Rob Hunt, QB Omar Jacobs, TE Adam Johnson, DE Montez Murphy, CB Zach Norton, CB Dimitri Patterson, CB Justin Phinisee, LB Nick Reid, TE Keith Willis and LB Timi Wusu. As per club policy, no further terms of the agreements were announced.

Butler (6-0, 200) began his NFL career as a rookie free agent with San Diego in 2004, appearing in five regular season games and one postseason contest with the Chargers, returning two kickoffs for 35 yards. He also spent seven weeks on the Baltimore practice squad before being activated for the final game of the 2005 season. Butler finished second on the team with 84 tackles as a senior at Robert Morris University, after spending his junior season at wide receiver. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native played two seasons for the University of Pittsburgh after a standout prep career at Perry High School in Pittsburgh.

Hanoian (6-2, 263) was on the Chiefs 53-man roster for one contest in 2006 and spent the final 10 games of the season on the practice squad. He spent training camp with the N.Y. Giants in 2006 and was allocated to NFL Europe by the N.Y. Giants, attending training camp with the Rhein Fire. Hanoian spent portions of the 2005 season on the Green Bay Packers practice squad after originally entering the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Detroit Lions in 2005. The Providence, Rhode Island native was a two-year letter winner at Syracuse, seeing time at linebacker, tight end and fullback for the Orange.

Howard (6-3, 294) appeared in 20 regular season games (one start) and two postseason games in two seasons with St. Louis (2004-05) after originally signing as a rookie free agent in 2004. He registered 29 tackles (16 solo) as well as four postseason tackles (four solo) before being released prior to the start of the 2006 regular season. He appeared in 44 career games for the University of Idaho, finishing his collegiate career with 182 tackles (87 solo), 10.0 sacks, nine passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. The Seattle, Washington native was an all-conference selection as a two-way starter at Kent-Meridian High School in Kent, Washington.

Hunt (6-4, 301) originally entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick (165th overall) of Indianapolis in the 2005 NFL Draft. He spent the last two seasons on the Denver practice squad and gained valuable playing experience with the Rhein Fire during the 2006 NFL Europe season. The Cavalier, North Dakota native was a four-year starter at North Dakota State and was named first-team All-America in Division I-AA. Hunt was a two-time all-state selection at Cavalier High School in Cavalier, North Dakota.

Jacobs (6-4, 232) began his NFL career as a fifth-round draft pick (164th overall) with Pittsburgh in 2006, but was released prior to the start of the regular season, spending one week on the club’s practice squad. The Delray Beach, Florida native also spent the final six weeks of the 2006 season on the Eagles developmental squad. In 25 games of action with Bowling Green, Jacobs set school records with 71 career touchdown passes and a 64.5 completion percentage. His 41-to-4 touchdown to interception ratio in 2004 established an NCAA Division I-A single-season record and earned him second-team All-America honors. Jacobs was a first-team all-conference and second team all-state selection at Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach, Florida.

Johnson (6-5, 235) attended training camp with the Chiefs and spent time on the club’s practice squad a year ago. He originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Carolina in 2004 and was on the Panthers developmental squad that season. Johnson played wide receiver, quarterback and long-snapper during his final two seasons at the University of Buffalo. He began his college career at Chaffey Junior College in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Murphy (6-6, 256) originally joined the Chiefs as a free agent in 2006, where he spent two weeks on the active roster and appeared in one game. Murphy also spent 12 weeks on the club’s practice squad in 2006. The Meridian, Mississippi native initially entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Green Bay a year ago, but was released prior to the season. He was a two-year letterwinner at Baylor, recording 72 tackles (46 solo), including 14.5 for loss, 5.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and three passes defensed. Murphy was a two-way lineman and also played basketball at East St. Louis High School in East St. Louis, Illinois.

Norton (5-11, 185) was on the Chiefs practice squad for their AFC Wild Card Game at Indianapolis (1/6). He spent time on the Ravens practice squad in 2005 after entering the NFL as a rookie free agent with Baltimore in 2004. The Ft. Lauderdale, Florida native was a three-year starter at the University of Cincinnati, producing 155 tackles (102 solo), 9.5 stops for loss, and nine INTs. Norton was a first-team all-state selection at Jefferson County High School in Tallahassee, Florida.

Patterson (5-10, 190) entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Washington in 2005, appearing in three games that season, recording one INT, one pass defensed and one special teams tackle. He also spent eight weeks on the Redskins practice squad in 2005 and one week on the Minnesota practice squad in 2006. Patterson was a first-team all-conference selection in one year of action at Tuskegee Institute after returning two blocked field goals for touchdowns and a blocked extra point for two points. The Orlando, Florida native started his collegiate career at Southeast Missouri State where he was a NCAA Division I-AA All-America pick in 2003. Patterson was an all-state selection at Evans High School in Orlando, Florida.

Phinisee (5-11, 199) spent two different parts of the 2006 season on the Chiefs practice squad in addition to a week stint on the Patriots developmental squad. He originally entered the NFL as the first of two picks by the Buccaneers in the seventh round (235th overall) in 2006, but was released prior to the season. He started 29 games at Oregon, posting 183 tackles, 3.0 sacks, seven interceptions and 19 passes defensed. The Long Beach, California native was a second-team all-state selection as a senior at Compton High School in Compton, California.

Reid (6-3, 234) rejoins the Chiefs after attending training camp with the club in 2006. Reid played in 48 games (40 starts) at the University of Kansas, finishing his career second in school history with 416 tackles (254 solo). He added 41.0 tackles for loss (-154.0 yards), 14.0 sacks (-85.0 yards), three INTs, 14 passes defensed, nine QB pressures, one fumble recovery and six forced fumbles. He started all 12 games as a senior and was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Reid posted 112 tackles (72 solo), 14.0 tackles for loss (-49.0 yards), 3.0 sacks (-15.0 yards), an INT, six passes defensed and two forced fumbles. He earned all-state honors as a senior at Derby High School in Derby, Kansas.

Willis (6-6, 260) was on the Chiefs practice squad for the final 11 games of the 2006 season after attending training camp with Seattle. He caught 18 passes for 290 yards (16.1 avg.) and one touchdown for Frankfurt Galaxy during the 2006 NFL Europe season. Willis originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the Green Bay Packers in 2004. He spent time on Cleveland’s practice squad in 2004 and attended training camp with Cleveland in 2005. The Norfolk, Virginia native caught 14 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns at Virginia Tech. Willis prepped at Norview High School in Norfolk, Virginia where he was named the number seven tight end in the nation by SuperPrep.

Wusu (6-2, 219) entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Oakland in 2006 and spent the first three weeks of the season on the reserve/injured list prior to being released. He also spent six weeks on the Carolina practice squad last season. The Stanford product totaled 47 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his collegiate career while playing both safety and linebacker. Wusu earned conference defensive MVP honors as a senior at Palo Alto High School in Palo Alto, California.

I have pretty high hopes for Murphy, Reid, and Adam Johnson. I think Johnson is the replacement at LS and can actually contribute at TE. He catches everything thrown to him.

isn't this just a testiment to how desperate we are getting? I hope a suprise comes from this, but it certainly is like a lot of other teams trash.

Every team signs these types of FA as camp fodder and to send to Europe. Not a big deal really.
