**** you, Vista. Help, please

I downloaded a free trial of video capture software tonight, tried it and didn't like it.

So I go into Control Panel to uninstall the program, and do so.

After the uninstall, I went to the Desktop to drag the program's Shortcut Icon to the recycle bin like I've done a million times before, and the ****er give me an error message:

"Item not found. Could not find this item. This is no longer located in C: blah, blah, blah. Verify the item's location and try again.

So now, unless a fine citizen of CP comes up with a solution, I'm stuck with two icons on my desktop I don't want or need there.

Please. Help. Thanks.

If nobody can tell you how to get rid of them, then I have a semi-solution.

I think you can create a folder and put the icons in them, and then make the folder a hidden folder and you won't see it again.

Jesus ****.

That was embarrassingly simple, and happened by complete accident.

If you go to your Desktop and right-click, there's an option to "refresh."

I guess for times like these, because it worked - though I can't think of another reason why you'd "-refresh-" your desktop.

Mods, you can abort this thread if you like. Sorry.

I tried that first, and it didn't work. Found that odd.

I'm good now.

Right now, I am a cheap bastard. I've even shown restraint and not bought Red Dead Redemption or Fight Night 4.

Even with our kick-ass health insurance, I'm paying $100 a week for physical therapy, and it looks like I'll be doing so until potentially October - as I've tentatively scheduled the other knee to be done July 12. I bumped the "crutches" thread with an update.

So yeah, and extra $400 a month lost, while not crippling us by any means, is definitely noticed.

But then again, it IS only $30.

Sell me on 7, fellas. I'm not as concerned about features as I am the transition, and being a non-tech savvy person, how not having an installation disk could completely **** me if I have any issues later.

Fire away.

It's very intuitive to use and not nearly as annoying as Vista. It's also faster.

It's the best Windows-based OS I've used...and if you are worried about not having a disk, you can get one sent to you for a small additional fee (or have your download information retained by MS).

Am I going to have to back everything up, wipe Vista, and install 7?

Or can I literally just download 7 and everything will magically still work?

I'm telling you, I'm a tech idiot. Ask Clayton. We've been IM'ing back and forth about video capture options that work with DTV and my PC.

You don't have to wipe Vista as you'll be installing an upgrade OS (not a standalone copy).

Save your important documents on DVD or a flash drive, upgrade, and then re-install the programs (provided they are compatible) in the new OS.

If you are worried about certain programs, run the Windows 7 upgrade adviser on your PC.

Ran the adviser.

No major issues, other than it didn't really answer any questions.

It told me the few programs that AREN'T compatible, and listed 8-10 that ARE, but made no mention of 98% of the programs I have.

And FTR, are you telling me that no matter what, I'll have to re-install programs like Word, iTunes, Firefox, etc?
