This is outdated from conference craziness last year but I got a huge kick out of this from EDSBS.

BEHOLD THE FUTURE OF COLLEGE ATHLETICS: THE SUNBEAST

http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday....s-the-sunbeast

DEMOGRAPHICS: The SUNBEAST will pair two athletic conferences in desperate need of each other, the Sun Belt and the Big East.

The first, the SunBelt, a collection of schools with affordable real estate and no BCS Bid or substantial television contract. The second is the Big East, a conference in dire need of members and a place to find cheap real estate for retirement homes, investment properties, and an eventual escape from the wintry sorrow-holes they inhabit.

If you cannot read between the lines: this is all an elaborate real estate venture with a football cover. We plan to buy the land now, upsell it, and then leave the new owners with worthess acreage and ourselves with full pockets. Remember to read the brochures! You laugh, but people include blatant admissions of truth in them all the time, and you deserve to be snookered for not paying attention to the fine print. There is a Dunkin' Donuts coupon on page five of this presentation, and you probably won't ever know that because you won't read that far, either.

TV PITCH. Leveraging key demos like this, the Sun Beast brings blahbetty blahbetty whatever. Like you need a pitch with football, but just in case you do, let's tell the story with a little help from the Golden Corral.

They have chocolate fountains at the Golden Corral now. You say "Ha-ha, that's funny, I won't eat there, but if I do, I will probably just have a salad, because Golden Corral is basically one big boot camp for fatness." So you get a salad, but then you think, "Well, I may as well try some of the bourbon chicken."

So you try some Bourbon Chicken, and it's not good, but it is certainly better than you thought. This leads down a slippery slope of Golden Corral consumption choices until you arrive at it, drawn by forces you cannot understand. It stands before you. From one man's perspective, it is just simmering C-grade chocolate and sugar heated and pumped down a contoured mold; from another, it is a ziggurat of culinary orgasm, a tower of fulfillment into which one dips the otherwise regretful marshmallows and disappointing cake squares of life to redeem their sadness.

Either way you're eating it, and thus the pitch. When someone doubts the brilliance of this plan, just repeat: "It's like a chocolate fountain at the Golden Corral, but for football."

TEAMS: The remaining members of the Big East plus all current members of the Sun Belt Conference, as detailed below.

UConn

Louisville

West Virginia

Cincinnati

South Florida

Rutgers

Arkansas State

Middle Tennessee State

Troy

University of Louisiana-Lafayette

University of Louisiana-Monroe

Florida International

Western Kentucky

University of North Texas

Florida Atlantic University

Further membership may be considered, but we draw the line at a 24 team conference. Anything more than that would be excessive, and we are not targeting the SUNBEAST as an orphanage for wayward football programs. (A foster home perhaps, but not an orphanage.)

DIVISIONS. As a trendsetter in its field, the SUNBEAST will be divided not into two uneven divisions, but instead into THREE equal divisions of five teams a piece.

THE SUNFISH DIVISION: Florida Atlantic, Florida International, South Florida, Universities Monroe and Lafayette from Louisiana.

THE SUNBEAR DIVISION: University of North Texas, Western Kentucky, Troy, Arkansas State, Middle Tennessee State.

THE SUNLAMP DIVISION: Louisville, UConn, West Virginia, Rutgers, Cincinnati.

The divisions are regionally themed, and tap into resonant market specificities: the maritime/fishing themes for the Florida/Louisiana divisions, the rural/rugged connotations of the SunBear divisions, and the need for sunlight and Vitamin D from the Sunlamp division.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME:
As another trendsetting move, the SUNBEAST will host the first two-day, three-team championship weekend. The winners from each will be invited to the logical home of the Sun Belt Championship Game: Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. A tentative agreement in principle has already guaranteed sponsorship of the game until the year 2132, and that includes travel expenses even from such far-flung locales as Denton, Texas.

How does this work? The answer is simple. Take three teams, one beautifully appointed stadium built from abused Filipino labor, and them apply the principles of MUSCLE CONFUSION.

IDEAL TELEVISION CONTRACT: We are currently negotiating with the Food Network and the Big Ten Network. The Food Network would require coaches to eat certain foods on the sideline for endorsement money, while the B1G is interested in broadcasting our games because "women's volleyball isn't cutting it, and SUNBEAST football would make our product look more enviable in comparison."

FSU and Clemson could make almost 10 million more a year in the Big 12. That's 130 million over the life of the contract more than they could make in the ACC. With the probable changes upcoming in the BCS format, I can't see why they stay in the ACC if the Big 12 is waiting with open arms.

In other news, Delaney and the B1G/Pac12 are not giving up on the "only conference champions" plan. Notre Dame may face a reckoning soon.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/...otball-playoff

Quote:
Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany, who has floated ideas for how a four-team college football playoff should be set up, said Wednesday that any new format shouldn't include a team that doesn't win its division.

...

"Some people think it should just be the top four teams; some people think it should just be the four highest-rated champions," Delany said. "I was just floating some ideas of how you might have a hybrid where champions were respected and there was still room for at-large.

"The polls don't always measure strength of schedule. Some conferences are playing nine games, some are playing eight. The Pac-12 is playing nine and then to go out and play a round-robin game against us, that's 10 and some of them are going to play Notre Dame -- that's 11 difficult games. If they're ranked fifth in the country and they won a conference championship, I think that's quite an accomplishment. Some teams don't even win their own division. They started off highly in the rankings, lose early, don't play a championship game and they might end up at four."

He doesn't have a reputation for necessarily being correct, he has a reputation for being Deloss Dodds' mouthpiece ready to say whatever UT wants him to say. In this case, thats actually useful info.

It's useful in determining what Texas is going to do. It's not useful in determining what other schools are going to do.

I admit that I never saw FSU joining the Big 12 but after seeing just how much more Fox and ESPN are valuing the Big 12 deal over the ACC its hard to not see them coming.

It is useful in determining that there's smoke and this isn't laughable "are you kidding, we aren't even talking" BS. They could always back out and decide to stay, but we're not trying to figure out what FSU will decide, because a lot of people are dismissively asserting there's nothing TO decide, proclaiming that its inherently ridiculous for FSU to even think about a move.

It is highly, highly likely that FSU is talking in back channels with the Big 12, if for no other reason than because they'd be insane not to consider a move given the ACC's new, horrible contract.

at the ACC

http://www.bizjournals.com/triad/new...w-tv-deal.html

Quote:
Per the contract, the full $3.6 billion will come to the Atlantic Coast Conference in an escalated formula. North Carolina State, for example, will receive $12.3 million in the first year of the deal, about $1 million more than it received in television disbursements last year.

The Wolfpack won’t actually see $17 million until about year nine, estimates Chris Kingston, executive senior associate athletics director at N.C. State. Universities will receive more in subsequent years, up to about $23 million by year 15, Kingston says.
Doubt ND is coming to that, we'll see who jumps ship.

The money the ACC gets in grants more than makes up for the few million less they get from their AD. FSU and CU are using the Big 12 as leverage to gain power in the ACC (think Matt Painter).

At this point, its probably best to step back from realignment speculation until maybe the 2nd week of June, unless some real mainstream media breaks something. Just about every reasonable and unreasonable scenario (UL, UC, FSU, UM, VT, MD, UND olympic sports, UND full member, BYU, mystery team, 2 of them or 4 of them, in some order) has been tossed out there and argued on.

I think right now, no one is saying or leaking anything, and all we've got are bloggers making guesses hoping to make a name for themselves if they are right. (I lump bloggers and media confidently saying nothing will happen at the same level, or even lower. Hey, maybe they wont move, but there's obviously a very good reason for the rumors. Given the ACC's ridiculously bad contract, and given FSU and Clemson have to compete with the SEC, it makes no sense to go out on a limb and say they are ACC 4 lyfe)

No one is going to do anything until late June at the absolute earliest because we need to know exactly what the new BCS postseason will look like. The Big 12 actually has to sign their new contract too, but that'll happen soon, and when it does we'll get another flurry of rumors. ACC teams also have all the way until August 15 to notify their conference that they'll leave, so there's no reason for them to hurry.

We're probably looking at mid-late July for any real news, maybe later.
