Brian Kirk in talks to direct 'Thor 2'

Marvel, Disney taps 'Game of Thrones' helmer for superhero sequel

After tackling the fantasy genre with episodes of HBO's "Game of Thrones," helmer Brian Kirk is in early talks to direct "Thor 2" for Marvel Studios and Disney.

Pic would mark Kirk's directorial debut on a major Hollywood production, which has already been skedded for a July 26, 2013 release.

The project will bring back Chris Hemsworth's hammer-wielding superhero to the bigscreen for his next adventure after "The Avengers."

Kirk rose to the top of the list of directors vying for the job after he showed his abilities to juggle large ensembles of thesps and complex storylines in his TV projects, while also grounding the fantasy genre via his work on "Thrones." The "Thor" sequel is expected to feature a large cast of Aasgardians and creatures in the Norse mythology-set world.

In addition to "Thrones," the Irish helmer is best known for directing episodes of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" as well as Showtime's "Dexter" and BBC's "Luther." He has also helmed episodes of yet-to-bow series "Luck" on HBO and "Great Expectations" on BBC.

Disney was eager to put the pic on its schedule after "Thor" collected $447 million at the worldwide box office, and the character proves a central figure in "The Avengers."

Although invited back to direct Hemsworth in another "Thor," Kenneth Branagh opted not to return.

Don Payne, who co-wrote "Thor," is tackling the sequel. He also scripted Fox's "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer."

Production began last month on "Great Expectations," BBC's three-part adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel. Project, penned by Sarah Phelps, stars Ray Winstone, Gillian Anderson, Douglas Booth, Izzy Meikle-Small and Vanessa Kirby.

A number of other helmers had been considered for the "Thor" sequel, including Drew Goddard ("Cabin in the Woods"), James McTeigue ("Ninja Assassin"), Noam Murro ("300: Battle of Artemesia") and Breck Eisner ("The Crazies").

Other helmers are also being eyed should Kirk's deal not go through.

A Marvel Studios spokesperson declined to comment.

they cut a scene were Loki breaks down about Frigga and didn't really highlight Thor's grief. The "trust my rage" line isn't ever portrayed (and could have done so via more brutality in their fight scene with Malekith/Kurse but it's not R )

Additionally, I wish they'd given some insight into the books Frigga was giving as it would have provided a bit of insight to what happens with Loki in the future

Although it wasn't a full on freak out, when he was given the news of Friggas death he threw the furniture against the walls. When Thor came to visit him, just that night or the day after he looked horrible lying against the side of his cell wall. When he's on the speeder flying through the dark world he talks and breaks down against Thor about Frigga to the point where Thor says, "She wouldn't want us to fight."

There's an underlying tension throughout the entire movie from Frigga's death to Loki's "sacrifice" that prove he's broken up by Frigga's death. I mean to each his/her own but I was more entertained by this film than I was the first. You win on the final fight scene between Loki and Thor being better, but in this one he was more of the trickster Loki that I like seeing and less like the "THRONE IS MINE BY BIRTHRIGHT!" brat Loki that he was in the first. I didn't like Loki terribly well in the Avengers either, especially his scenes with Thor outside of Coulson's death.

Thor 2 was the first movie where Loki claims the throne was his birthright. In the others, he claims that he wants to rule (and in Thor, he claims that he only wanted to prove he was a worthy heir and didn't want the throne).

THOR 2 Blu-Ray to Include Marvel One-Shot "All Hail the King"
The British Board of Film Classification has released a list of bonus material that will be included on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-Ray. The special features include six deleted/extended scenes with audio commentary, a gag reel, an audio commentary track for the feature, a few featurettes, and an "Exclusive Look – Captain America: The Winter Soldier." The set also includes the new Marvel One-Shot, "All Hail the King." The Marvel One-Shot could tell the story of how Loki stole the throne and what happened to Odin, as that part all occurred off-screen in Thor: The Dark World.

Another and probably more likely possibility is that the king that is being referenced is Ben Kingsley. You may remember that a few months ago, it was reported that Ben Kingsley was shooting a secret project for Marvel. It's confirmed that the Marvel One-Shot: All Hail The King filmed in August and September of 2013, which would match up closely to the time period when Kingsley indicated he had done another project for Marvel. The Marvel One-Shot: All Hail The King will likely feature a story revolving around Trevor Slattery, who is the actor that was hired to play The Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Last October, Latino Review reported that the real Mandarin will show up in the One-Shot and won't be happy with Trevor for mocking his identity and legacy.
