2003 Ford Focus SVT with 77k miles. Really though... it depends on what kind of car you are looking for and how far away you are willing to go to get it. |

Ive always had great luck going to smaller lots and talking to the owner and offering a straight up 10% over cost for a vehicle if I can attend an auction with them and give a max bid for 7 or so cars but to only bid until that point and after one auction is won, disregard the rest of the listed vehicles and Ive actually made a couple friends doing this and always got great deals on cars doing so.
I have a talent to talk to almost anyone and cut to the chase in a friendly way that some people respect. If they are receptive and you have a month or so to get said vehicle and think you can approach it this way, you will get twice the vehicle you would normally get for your money and will likely add a contact that you can use for future vehicle purchases as well...hell you can even roll the dice and sell a couple cars a year for side money...but you may want to consult your local laws to find out how many you can sell before you are required to attain a resale license to do so. Not sure where you live, but if its near the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area and I can help let me know via PM and I can see if I can set you up with a couple people that might help you out. Mostt of them even bring their in house mechanic to the auctions so they can tell you what may need done to the vehicles you are looking at. Its basically pure profit for the guy, but Ive only had luck with owners of smaller dealerships with it...hell, one of them ended up being the brother of a long time friend of mine that I never even knew the connection till after I got the car (the maxima I got before I bought my truck) A little over a year ago I got my truck (2006 colorado) for a little over 6k after everything but the title and taxes and it books at around 12...thats not a normal every day example but if you are patient, you will be rewarded with this strategy. |

Go get a 1 year off lease, put a few grand down, save the rest for the payments. You should be able to snag an 09 or 10 for less than $300 a month. Most willl always have warranties left on them. ( I know up here in Canuck land ya can) Hell Honda Civic's are going for $105 a month NEW. BUT It all depends on your situation of cource. Experience has taught me, buy used and always be blue.

Quit looking for a fashion statement car and get a small, fuel efficient car that just runs. You'll save a couple of grand just because you won't be competing with every nitwit who "needs" an SUV and you'll save money on gas every time you fill up.

Minivans really depreciate fast. If you're only going to spend $5500 and want something to haul the family around in, I would suggest going that route.
