Anyone currently use/have used a WiFi extender?

I currently use Xfinity (only thing available) and my speed is just fine. The problem is my daughters room in the far corner of the house has horrible connection and speeds.

I’m looking at buying an extender for her room.

Any suggestions?

If you can, purchase a Wireless Access Point (AC Point) instead because an Extender will cut your entire wireless signal in half and it won't redistribute it evenly throughout your home.

The best brand I've found is Ubiquiti.

What is your speed goal? If it's lower, you can use the Powerline Adapters.

If you're wanting like 200+mbps throughout the house, an AC Point is your best bet.

I guess it depends on the house but when we were back in KC for the holidays, my brother had Google Mesh all throughout the house but it wasn't very effective.

It's about a 6,500 square foot house and I don't know enough about Mesh to know whether or not that was part of the problem, but it was really difficult to get a strong signal at every mesh point. Once the whole the family was at the house (about 25 of us or so), the signal decreased dramatically.

Haven’t used them personally but Netgear Orbi was recommended to me for our 3 level home. Haven’t experienced any drops yet so haven’t pursued it further but that’s what the xfinity rep recommended during install.

My house isnt nearly that big and if we’ve ever had 25 people on it I was busy entertaining, but I’m fairly certain I don’t have the bandwidth for 25 devices so it doesn’t matter that much.

I pay for 450 so I would be hoping for something over 250 for sure.

Any recommendations?

Yes, Ubiquiti gear for sure. It’s what’s used in restaurants and hotels, so they’re not using cheap components like those that Netgear and some of the sub-$100 dollar brands use and they don’t burn out in 12-18 months.

This is probably a dumb question but is there any way to run a CAT 6 line to anywhere near her room? If so, you can buy a Gigabit Switch for less than $20 dollars, then install a Wireless Access Point, which will provide that area of the house with your full 450 bandwidth. I hired an AV company to run a line under my house and up the outside wall of my wife’s office so that I could install the same gear, and it cost me $95 dollars.

Before that, she was getting 5 mbps. Since, 500+.

As I mentioned earlier, an extender will take the signal and cut it in at least half because the extender has to constantly send and receive the signal, so it will degrade quickly. I’ll text my brother to see if he’s had any better luck configuring his Mesh Network as well.

I had tried a few over the years with no success. Last year I decided to spend the money and go with Orbi. Now every nook and cranny of the house is getting great signal. It's a 2 story house and our router is in the basement.

You can also just a buy a really nice router and replace the shitty Xfinity one. They have ones with great range. You're looking at routers around the $250 price point.

In my house, the router is in the basement and the bedroom on second floor on the opposite side of the house is getting a strong signal.

Have you considered running a cable from the back of your existing router out to your shop? Wrap it, fire up the rental trencher, and run it. Only thing is at that distance you'd have to look into what cable would carry a decent signal, probably Cat 6A or Cat 8.

Once you get the cable into your shop you'd plug it into an access point device like Dane is talking about and you'd have your own wi-fi network for the shop. If you have an extra router laying around you can use that for an access point, that's what I have running right now.

external, i have a ubiquiti that the wireless guys from work installed. they put it on the roof of my house next to the radio receiver and aimed it across the driveway to the other unit mounted on a tripod on the daughters roof. works pretty nifty.

if you need something inside, you might want to check out this:
https://www.amplifi.com/
i know several people using these. set up the main unit then you can plug them into outlets around the house.
