Net Neutrality: You should be concerned

Net Neutrality is the guiding principle of the internet. It preserves our right to browse freely and communicate openly over the internet.

Net Neutrality enables and protects free speech.

It forces ISPs to provide us with open networks and disallows any discrimination against an application or content which rides over that network. Just as your cellular network shouldn’t decide who you can or cannot call, ISPs shouldn’t interfere with what you can or cannot do on the internet.

If you haven't been following along, Net neutrality is the idea that all traffic on the Internet should be treated equally. That means your broadband provider, which controls your access to the Internet, can't block or slow down the services or applications you use over the Web. It also means your Internet service provider -- whether it's a cable company or telephone service -- can't create so-called fast lanes that force content companies like Netflix to pay an additional fee to deliver their content to customers faster.

These huge companies will profit by providing better speed to the sites that pay them more money. We have no right to know which sites paid for faster speed. All the money and power of the internet will be in the hands of a few powerful corporations.

Just think of the consequences for a second......start ups and small businesses will have to compete against the power of the big dogs that paid money for faster traffic. Service and options will slowly fade away due to an uneven competing environment.

The more sinister part could be the billionaires with an agenda will buy majority stakes in these ISPs and give faster speeds to sites aligned with their beliefs. This could happen on both sides of the political fence. And you will never know who paid or what group of sites are being favored. Talk about picking winners and losers.....GEEZZZZ

Can anyone tell me why even do this? How does this benefit the internet or us in any way?

You can pay more for faster speeds now, before repeal of net neutrality. That's not what this is about. There's no reason to think that your particular vision of the future after repeal is the right one or that it would be a bad one if it were. And what's wrong with paying for what you get instead of having light users subsidize heavy users anyway?
Of course there's reason to think that. We have evidence of what occurred before net neutrality. We have evidence of what has happened in other countries without net neutrality. Your idea that removing all regulations will result in huge corporations simply choosing not to screw their customers when they have an opportunity to increase profit is straight fairy tale. That's not what happens in reality.

I could not watch Netflix with Cox Cable prior to net neutrality. Constant buffering. Works awesome now though. Wonder what the hell happened..

I've never had a problem with that. Like I said, if you feel you've not been treated fairly regarding that, it's the province of the FTC—not the FCC. I don't know why you pro-NN folks ignore that point.
No need to ruin the rest of what is good about the internet which still has increased coverage and speed for millions.

Oh, well this individual claim is certainly testable and verifiable.

Do you have any points to articulate on this topic? Or are you conceding? Looks like the latter.
In your specific case, throttling your internet may be a good thing for the rest of us.

You can choose what social media you use and you can choose your search engine. Half of America only has access to 1 ISP, you can't choose there.

Being perceived that way to BEP doesn't necessarily make it so. She's got a lot of kooky thoughts & ideas.
