Net Neutrality: You should be concerned

Net Neutrality is the guiding principle of the internet. It preserves our right to browse freely and communicate openly over the internet.

Net Neutrality enables and protects free speech.

It forces ISPs to provide us with open networks and disallows any discrimination against an application or content which rides over that network. Just as your cellular network shouldn’t decide who you can or cannot call, ISPs shouldn’t interfere with what you can or cannot do on the internet.

If you haven't been following along, Net neutrality is the idea that all traffic on the Internet should be treated equally. That means your broadband provider, which controls your access to the Internet, can't block or slow down the services or applications you use over the Web. It also means your Internet service provider -- whether it's a cable company or telephone service -- can't create so-called fast lanes that force content companies like Netflix to pay an additional fee to deliver their content to customers faster.

These huge companies will profit by providing better speed to the sites that pay them more money. We have no right to know which sites paid for faster speed. All the money and power of the internet will be in the hands of a few powerful corporations.

Just think of the consequences for a second......start ups and small businesses will have to compete against the power of the big dogs that paid money for faster traffic. Service and options will slowly fade away due to an uneven competing environment.

The more sinister part could be the billionaires with an agenda will buy majority stakes in these ISPs and give faster speeds to sites aligned with their beliefs. This could happen on both sides of the political fence. And you will never know who paid or what group of sites are being favored. Talk about picking winners and losers.....GEEZZZZ

Can anyone tell me why even do this? How does this benefit the internet or us in any way?

Don't be stupid. It's not political because BEP thinks it is. It's political because it's political. What possible non-political interpretation can you put on the warning to be concerned about an upcoming vote in the federal government?

That hasn't been true for a decade or two. The vast majority of Americans have multiple ISP options.

False. Unless you consider dial up and dsl an actual isp.

That bitch is certifiably nuts. I put her crazy dumb ass on ignore a long time ago when she started poking her ugly mug over here and running her mouth about anything that was remotely political.

No it's because you pillowbiters are too skeer'd to go into DC and face the music but put such threads here because it's not like that here—or supposed to be. Then ones not even contributing in this thread at all, are busy hiding in the rep panel.

42 now from Spott who has never had a post to me nor I do him. What a spineless coward.

Oh so you've decided to come out from hiding under your rock all this time today.

Howdy Spott! Glad to meet you. I don't know you but your introduction is pretty rocky.

Now are there any points you'd like to contribute on why you think NN is good and having it repealed is bad?

Can we still be friends if we disagree?

But things don't stay the same. Technology is always changing and gets cheaper over time or provides more options.

Sometimes I think I'm surrounded by idiots. More often than not, when I get that feeling, I'm slumming in the Lounge.

People don't make political topics political. Are we all supposed to just pat BRC on the back and cheer the political position he took in the OP?

Okay, I get it. Freedom is kooky to you. That's okay. Not very intellectual but okay.

I speak outside the index card of allowable opinion.

Make it more simple. Comcast owns NBC. Comcast can block customers from visiting CBS, ABC, FOX, CNN online.

If anyone is for repealing NN, then they are a ****ing moron or directly make money from it.

Is that way nearly every consumer has seen their choices for an ISP go down to 1 or 2? In my shitty hometown in the dial-up days, there were at least 4 options. Now there is 1.

If you really support Net Neutrality, it is going to take GOP voters contacting their GOP congressmen. I promise the other side is doing it.

Right now, GOP leaders need to know they can't just behave any way they want with impunity. If you're a republican, call, text, email your congressmen. Let them know that this is going to come up in the next election cycle, and their constituents care about it deeply.
