DLP TV as Computer Monitor?

I'm looking into buying a 50-60 inch TV, and I want to hook it up to use as my computer monitor as well. Ya, I know everybody says to get an LCD. But LCD's are expensive, and I'm not compromising size for a better picture. I basically want the biggest TV as possible for the cheapest price without a complete crappy picture. I see people buying 50 inch LCD's for like 4G's while you can get a DLP tv even larger for 1500. The picture really isn't worth 2500 extra for me.

I know LCD's have good longevity, but I don't have enough money to buy one. I like Plasmas, but I hear that you can experience burn in and some have longevity issues of having to replace the plasma. So then I come to DLP TV's. I see nothing wrong with these things unless I'm missing something. You can get a huge picture, for relatively cheap, and the picture looks great IMO. My only question is I'm basically going to be using it all the time, it will be on a bunch of hours a day as I would be using it as a tv and computer monitor. Will the lamp go out? Are they cheap to replace? With heavy use, how long until a lamp will go out? Is there anything wrong with using a 55 inch DLP TV as a computer monitor?

I bought an open box Mitsubishi 37in for 730 dollars.. Originally retailed for 2k+ when it came out last year.. I wheeled and dealed and told them I would get the plan if they dropped it more. Got the tv and a 5 year accidental replacement plan on the tv.. Come year five I am accidently knocking it off while cleaning so I can get a new TV...

I suppose with the right video card it will look good. I hooked my laptop up to my 50" Panasonic DLP and all the text was fuzzy and hard to read. I didn't care for it.

I have a 55 LCD and I paid 2 grand for it. You can get good inexpensive LCD monitors, you just have to look.

Make sure your video card can handle the resolution.

I was looking at a 50" Toshiba DLP from Tiger Direct. One thing that I found while researching is that the Toshiba bulbs tend to go out. They are around $200 to replace.

I would recommend buying some extended service plan. However, I wouldn't buy one from Tiger Direct. Tiger Direct's service plans are expensive. I just bought a refurb Vizio 42" LCD and they have service plans through their website. I get a 5 year on site service plan for $150

I'm not looking to spend over 1000 to 1200 though. 2G's is way outside of what I'm willing to pay. It has to be at least 50 inches too. I think I could live with a 42, but I really really want at least a 50. How do you work the video card thing? Are those expensive for your computer and how do u install them? I have no idea really about video cards.

It's going to look grainy, consider a 1080p TV set is 1920x1080 native resolution. Now consider a 24" widescreen computer monitor has 1920x1200. OK, so you have a 50" monitor with fewer pixels than a 24" monitor, so basically that means edges are going to be fuzzy as hell. It might be fine for gaming, but I suspect that for everyday use it would drive you crazy.

I bought a 50" samsung DLP......I love it. Hi-def channels are amazing....regular pictures are so-so...but that goes without saying.

I couldnt be happier with it so far.
