Mock 3/1 (Blowin' It Up Part II)

Brett Veach received my December memo apparently, so this mock is going to assume he carries through with the remainder of my releases and blow this thing up. So, here we go...

Reported Moves
TRADE QB Alex Smith to Washington for 2018 3rd round selection (78) and CB Kendall Fuller per sources (-$17.0 m)
RELEASE ILB Derrick Johnson
RELEASE CB Darrelle Revis
SIGNED CB David Amerson
TRADE CB Marcus Peters and 2018 6th round selection (199) to Los Angeles Rams for 2018 4th round selection (124) and 2019 2nd round selection
RELEASE FS Ron Parker

After these moves, Spotrac and OTC disagree on the exact cap number (18.3 and 19.7 respectively), but let’s carry it forward...

Tellin’ ‘Em To Kick Rocks
OLB Tamba Hali
It’s time for Tamba to hang them up, but if he doesn’t then it’s time for his release. There is zero reason to keep players that don't produce well beyond their primes, and they've done that a couple years too many already.
DE Allen Bailey
Allen Bailey has been steady, but hardly a force and certainly doesn’t push for double-teams, which he can’t split anyhow. He’s a really average 3-4 DE. I’m not saying average isn’t a good thing to have, but we’re blowing this up.
OLB Frank Zombo
Zombo has proved time and again that he's nothing but a special teams guy given that he can't get pressure on the QB. You can get special teamers with potential as late round picks and UDFAs. Time to move on, and pay a bit less for what you're getting.
TE Demetrius Harris
It's time for the basketball conversion experiment to end; Harris can't catch a cold.
RB Charcandrick West
Love me or hate me for this one, his production isn’t irreplaceable by a much cheaper option (like say a rookie UDFA or late round draft choice). The Chiefs need resources for players that make a much bigger impact than West, and $1.7 m is half of a starter’s wage at another position.

After these moves, the gap closes between Spotrac and OTC at $35.69 and $35.90 millon respectively. Let’s be merry and call it $35.8 million. I’m going to be greedy and have Bailey be a classified as a June 1 cut to save an extra million. Now, we roll over the $2.6 million from 2017 that neither of these sites has yet to take into account and we arrive at $39.4 million. We’re not going to use that number, of course, since we have to make some deductions. Let’s take off $6 million for an in-season transaction buffer. Let’s also take off $1.3 million for draft picks (see calculation following). This leaves the Chiefs with available cap spending of $32.1 million (aka Veach’s Monopoly Money).

Draft pick effective value calculation:
Draft pick first year salaries: $901,468 + 711,960 + 690,095 + 640,687 + 648,761 + 509,732 + 502,448 + 501,861 + 498,682 = $5,605,694
Effective draft pick salary offset: $480,000 * 9 = - $4,320,000
Effective draft pick cap burden: $1,285,694

Leavin’ ‘Em Behind
DL Bennie Logan, P Dustin Colquitt, QB Tyler Bray, CB Phillip Gaines, OL Jordan Devey, DB Steven Terrell, WR De'Anthony Thomas, OL Zach Fulton, CB Kenneth Acker, ILB Ramik Wilson, CB T. Mitchell, FB Anthony Sherman

Bringin’ ‘Em Back
DL Rakeem Nunez-Roches - RFA Original Round Tender $1.91 m
ILB Terrance Smith - ERFA Tender $630 k
CB Keith Baxter - ERFA Tender $560 k
ILB Kevin Pierre-Louis - 3 y $3.60 m $1.00 m guaranteed, 2018 ~ $1.10 m
DL Jarvis Jenkins - 2 y $2.50 m $500 k guaranteed, 2018 ~ $1.30 m
WR Albert Wilson – 4 y $14.10 m $5.0 m guaranteed, 2018 ~$2.3 m

Total Cost: $7.8 m

Free Agents:
DT Justin Ellis (OAK) - 4 y $16 m $4.5 m guaranteed, 2018 ~$3.50 m
Ellis has been a spot starter for Oakland up until 2017 when he assumed full-time duties where he excelled as a run plugger. The Chiefs don't need to spend $8 m per on a base NT, but they need to be strong up the middle of the defense (more to come).
ILB Christian Jones (CHI) – 4 y $30 m $15 m guaranteed, 2018 ~$6.50 m
Jones has been sensational as a reserve starter for Chicago, but the fact the Bears didn’t feel he deserved to be the outright starter in 2016 nor 2017 may have him looking for that gig elsewhere. Jones has the athleticism that Derrick Johnson had in his youth and would be an excellent replacement, which would help fortify the middle of the defense. I expect Jones to get a Trevathan-like deal on the open market.
FS Tre Boston (LAC) – 5 y $41 m $15 m guaranteed, 2018 ~$5.00 m
Boston has emerged as one of the best safeties in the league in coverage and after a year in LA may be looking to move on. The Chiefs have a need now for a top cover safety that is young, so Boston definitely fits the bill. Boston is pretty decent as a tackler as well and completes a trifecta of shoring up the middle of the defense.
CB Travis Carrie (OAK) – 3 y $21 m $6 m guaranteed, 2018 ~$5.50 m
Carrie is a solid outside defender that also has the tackling ability to play free safety if needed. He won’t wow you with big plays, but he’s physical and he’s going to be reliable and take care of his own responsibilities. Carrie would be a very solid #2 corner.
QB Austin Davis (SEA) - 2 y $2.2 m, 2018 ~ $1.00 m
Davis proved to be a capable backup but nothing more. He should be had cheap.
WR Deonte Thompson (BUF) - 2 y $2.0 m, ~ 2018 ~ $1.0 m
Thompson is a vertical threat on the field while also possessing excellent quickness. He is also a very good kick returner.
DL Quinton Dial (GB) - 1 y $790 k
Dial was an A quality NT in San Francisco when he started there for 1 season, but he has otherwise been misused. He received only spot duty on his 1-year deal in GB so he should be a cheap pick-up as a rotational player for an odd front.
OLB Jeremiah Attaochu (LAC) - 1 y $790 k + incentives
Attaochu looked like the real deal in 2015 but since then, much like Gillmore above, has been too often injured. He could also be cheap on a 1-year prove-it deal with incentives.

Total Cost: ~$ 24.9 m

Draft
2 (54) – DT RJ McIntosh – Miami (6’3” 293)
The Chiefs needs really start with fortifying that front 7. McIntosh is a quick, penetrating tackle that will play DE in the Chiefs 3-4, where he can continue causing havoc in the backfield.
3 (78 f/WAS) – OLB Jeff Holland – Auburn (6’1” 249)
The Chiefs’ biggest weakness defensively has been staying healthy at OLB so that they can apply pressure on the QB. This class is weak for edge rushers, but Holland shows decent burst, good hand usage, and the desire to make a play.
3 (86) – CB Isaac Yiadom – Boston College (6’1” 187)
I big on corners that can move their feet and transition from their backpedals, and Yiadom is one of those guys. He consistently sticks on top of receiver’s routes. Excellent in press, should Sutton ever go back to employing this tactic. Excellent ball recognition, flipping his head around to see the football before it arrives. A very willing and able tackler.
4 (122) – TE Troy Fumagalli – Wisconsin (6’5” 247)
Fumagalli reminds me a bit of guys like Anthony Fasano, solid hands, solid route ability, solid blocking, but doesn’t have elite speed to really be a seam stretcher. Basically, he’s everything you want in a #2 type of TE, and everything Demetrius Harris isn’t. It became painfully clear over the past two seasons that the Chiefs need to find a reliable option here.
4 (124 f/LAR) – OT/G Cole Madison – Washington State (6’5” 307)
The Chiefs have to continue to provide competition for the left guard spot and they could use someone as a swing tackle if in a pinch. Madison has enough agility and technique to play right tackle if need be, but he may be best suited inside where his athleticism can be used to get out in space and to the second level. He’s also a very proficient pass blocker. He isn’t yet a mauler in the run game because he played in a very pass happy offense, but he’s flashed good things there.
6 (209 c/Foles) – DE Zach Sieler – Ferris State (6’5” 290)
Dominated his level of competition (Division II) and is a freakish athlete for a man of his size, displaying outstanding burst off the snap and great lateral agility. Certainly has tremendous tools to work with and mold at the next level.
7 (233 f/ ARZ) – QB Jeremiah Briscoe – Sam Houston State (6’3” 220)
Briscoe absolutely dominated FCS competition the past couple of years running a shotgun spread attack, but he showed a plus arm and solid pre-snap read ability. He did make some throws he won’t get away with at the next level, but he can learn. Briscoe definitely has raw tools to work with and is a bit of a gunslinger. Not bad traits for a late round QB prospect that will likely be a 3rd stringer while he learns.
7 (235 f/ SEA) - FB Garrett Dickerson - Northwestern (6'2" 248)
Dickerson is a player that really intrigues me as a blocker and receiving option from the fullback position, plus he has enough athleticism to be a special teams’ guy. He’s a bit like another former NU superback, Dan Vitale (Cleveland). In the NU system, superbacks take on a hybrid FB/TE role and need to be very good athletes with plus receiving abilities.
7 (243 f/ TEN) - P Corey Bojorquez - New Mexico (6'0" 200)
Bojorquez is one of the best punters in the nation that nobody talks about and is left footed to boot. He isn’t Michael Dickson, but he’s close and he also won’t require a 3rd or 4th round pick. He boasted a 47.3 average on 67 punts this season, good for 4th in the nation (Townsend – 47.5, Daniel – 47.5, and Dickson – 47.4 were ahead of him). He was 6th in the nation in punts inside the 20 with 32 (3 had 33, 1 with 34 and Dickson with 42 ahead of him). Tied for 5th in the nation in net average at 42.0 (behind 42.2, 42.3, 43.0, 44.2 - Dickson).

QB: P. Mahomes, A. Davis, J. Briscoe
RB: K. Hunt, S. Ware, A. Hunt
FB: G. Dickerson
TE: T. Kelce, T. Fumagalli, O. Charles
WR: T. Hill, C. Conley, D. Robinson, J. Chesson, A. Wilson, D. Thompson
OL: E. Fisher, B. Witzman, M. Morse, L. Duvernay-Tardif, M. Schwartz, C. Madison, C. Erving, P. Ehinger
DE: C. Jones, J. Jenkins, R. McIntosh, R. Nunez-Roches, Z. Sieler
NT: J. Ellis, Q. Dial
OLB: J. Houston, D. Ford, J. Holland, T. Kpassagnon, J. Attaochu, D. Nicolas
ILB: C. Jones, R. Ragland, K. Pierre-Louis, U. Eligwe, T. Smith
CB: K. Fuller, T. Carrie, S. Nelson, I. Yiadom, D. Amerson, K. Baxter, A. Lampkin
DB: E. Berry, T. Boston, D. Sorensen, E. Murray, L. McQuay
ST: H. Butker, J. Winchester, C. Bojorquez
+A truckload of UDFAs and whatnot

Yiadom is the most underrated corner in the draft IMO. I think he’d be a great fit.

Also, I love McIntosh and though I’ve mostly been looking at him with our first 3rd, I wouldn’t mind taking him in the 2nd at all.

Latest I think he goes is the 4th, and I won't be surprised if it's the 3rd.

OK, first I will say thank you to yourself and Direckshun for posting your predictions. I enjoy these threads more than any other and intend on posting my own soon. With that said however, both of you are too realistic lololol...In the end I pray the Chiefs bring in at least ONE big name FA, at the very least someone I've heard of before lololol ...if we're going to create all that cap room, let's do something impactful with it. That's not to say you haven't, might be i'm just not big enough NFL fan to know the guys you suggest we grab. KC needs more star power!

Really like some of the FA signings on this one, Ellis, Christian Jones, Attaochu all make a lot of sense to me.

Great work kccrow. You even found a quality left footed punter. That's attention to detail right there.
