Pretty alarmist, IMO, but possible.

Spoiler!

That's a highly subjective expression. Do you also think that a home on the beach should be the same price as a home 20 miles inland?

You suck at analogies. It's nowhere near the same thing.

Yes, that's probably true. It just seems a little odd that you apparently have no problem with gasoline varying by ~$0.30 inside a city, but go a little crazy when the difference is $0.15 in two different towns miles apart from each other.

In the city, you have competition and can choose to go to one of the cheaper stations. The sheer number of stations also keep the price under control. What I have a problem with is when a handful of local business owners get together and artificially inflate the price of an indispensable product that we have no reasonable way to get elsewhere and all we can do is bend over and take it.

The only reason I brought up Republic is because it is a town in a similar situation (out in the boonies), yet hasn't seen the same price fixing. It was for comparison only. I know the 15 cents is only a couple of bucks per fillup but it's the principle of the thing.

I know you're trolling but c'mon.

Question: how do you know that the supplier costs are exactly the same between the stations in Coleville and Republic?

I don't. However, it is reasonable to assume that trucking it an extra 50+ miles through the highest year round mountain pass in Washington state doesn't make it cheaper.

Maybe they are buying it from Canada...

Well, I think that's a rather important fact to get cleared up before accusing someone of gouging, don't you think?

Which is why I asked you my initial question. We have now officially gone full circle.

Funny occurrences:

Every now and then there will be a flurry of letters to the local rag bitching about the inflated prices. Gas prices will mysteriously drop a dime or so for a while, despite no other area dropping, and then creep back up. This has happened three times in the last year and half (it needs to happen more often, IMO).

One of the independents started selling his gas at a nickle lower than everyone else earlier this year. This lasted for about a month and then he suddenly went back to being in lockstep with all of the other stations. We figured he got a visit from Bubba.

US oil demand dipped to near 4-year low in July-API

Aug 17 (Reuters) - U.S. crude oil demand fell to its lowest level in nearly four years in July as the weak U.S. economy continued to weigh on consumption, industry group American Petroleum Institute said Friday.

Petroleum demand in July dropped 2.7 percent from a year ago to 18.062 million barrels per day. It was the smallest amount of U.S. oil consumption for any month since September 2008.

So prices are on the decline?

Crude is a globally-traded commodity. While we still consume a large portion of the crude that is drilled, we are consuming less than before, so (ironically) our reduced consumption (while good) leads to us not having the same level of influence on crude pricing like we used to.

Today might very well be the day to fill up. The model tracks for what will probably be Hurricane Isaac appear to be pushing farther west and west. May very well drive itself into LA and TX now. According to twitter reports BP is already evacuating all their Gulf rigs.

Great

wait for the price gouging to begin. remember Katrina?

even if it is a weak hurricane, the price will go up.

Minnesota gets most of its oil from Canada-price will still go up.
