Help me out - Types of wood siding

There is one spot on my house siding that is rotting that I want to try to repair this week, but I'm not sure what type of siding it would be called to figure out where to go and get more of it to match the rest of the house.

It isn't siding like you typically see, (and that I found lots of on google) with horizontal boards overlapping each other, it is more of a large board like a piece of plywood that is shaped on the finished side to look like larger (like a couple feet) overlaps.

I was going to go to Lowes and just ask there or wander around, but I was going to try to do some research first to know what to look for and wondered if anyone might know what I'm talking about to help put a name to what I'm looking for.

As for the repair, I am hoping I can just find an existing seam, remove the panel or two that has the rot in it, cut one to fit back in (since it is between two windows, one directly above the other) nail it back in, seal the joint with silicone, and then prime and paint the new one. I am hoping the rot is only in the panel itself, else things might get a lot more complitcated on me.

Anyhow, thanks for any thoughts on what kind of siding this would be called, and for any other tips that might come to mind for anyone that has done this before.

A few folks here know what they are talking about regarding siding (Phobia), not sure about the rest. Now, if you were building a doggie ramp.....

you have the replacement process down pretty good. Be sure to use galvanized nails, and you probably don't need to prime as most likely the siding will be pre-primed. Make sure you get paintable caulking.

Is there typically plywood underneath the siding? Or it is going to be nailed directly to the exterial wall joists?

Do not use wood unless you paint both sides with 2 layers of paint. Just buy Hardi panels they look just like the pic. It will never rot. The whole exterior of the new section of my house is concrete (Hardi) board.

usually there will be OSB, but sometimes in some parts of the country you might find something closer to cardboard.

Ok, backtracking some.

I most definately have T1-11 on three faces of the house, but the rot is on the front which I see now that I am home (offshift just started today) is completely different. I am thinking it is lap siding there now that I have a good look at it again.

This is pretty close to what it looks like:

Now though, this opens up a whole new can of worms. If there are 3-4 boards that are rotten, do you have to take down the whole wall of siding? Or is there a way to get the new boards up under ones above them and do it effectively? There aren't really any verticle seams, as the runs aren't long enough that it was needed.

And a wider view. Ignore the unfinished basement "curtains" and kids abused blinds.

I work in a roofing and siding supply house.
Looks like a product called Smart Siding or Smart Board. Basically OSB with a textured coating.
I don't deal much in this stuff, but I can get it here in the Tulsa area.
If you want, I can get you a ballpark price for the stuff, but I don't know how accurate it will be in your area.

That's kind of a shiplap version of wood composite siding. Print your picture, take the measurement of the pitch (distance between laps) and lengths required-- don't butt any ends together to save a few bucks, if you don't have to. You may have to pry off your plastic shutters, to get to the nails you'll be putting in beneath them. Good luck. Hope you don't find any sin underneath.

The location of that damage tells me that you probably have an issue with the window right above it as well. I wouldn't be surprised if it's rotting out and you just don't realize it yet.
