With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Bruce Chen is garbage.

There are VERY few (non-knuckle ball pitchers) that can lob balls 85mph and be somewhat successful in this league. 85mph is HS level pitching. He may place the ball well at times, but once a team has your stuff down they're going to start hitting the crap out of you.

I hate to say it but I think I am done looking at our win/loss record this season. Its just too frustrating and painful to maintain the level of hope I have all year. At this point it will just be nice not to finish in last.

I'd say they can do 25-52 at this point. The bullpen is going to be completely wiped out by the end of this month, Sanchez will be starting for the rest of the year, Chen is now our ace and we still have Frenchy/Yuni-Getz in this line up. Last 11 games, 2-9. The starting pitching is one of the if not the worst in the majors. I am being objective about this teams chances.

Cain reminds me of Reggie Sanders, people around me were saying "Oh look at our lineup it is almost complete, we just need a second basemen, I was like...yes and a 1,2,3,4,5 starters. That is all and we are ready to go. It was a very large crowd and they were into it most of the time.

So, in order to compete in 2013, we need at least 3 top of the rotation starters. I mean, Hochevar can be an acceptable 4. And Mendoza, if he continues to pitch the way he has been, can be an acceptable fifth. But Chen is done. Sanchez is done. And thusfar, the mixture of teaford/mazzaro/adcock doesn't really seem effective.

As much as I hate it, Im going to have to agree with this. The offense isnt developed enough to carry a shit rotation and worn out bullpen for a week, much less half a season.

So people keep connecting Broxton to the Mets. What, in addition to Broxton, would it take to get Zach Wheeler from the Mets?

Well we finally saw what our offense can be yesterday with Cain and Perez taking care of the bottom of the lineup. We beat up a pitcher with a 3-1 record and a 2.6 or so ERA. Our offense may finally be what we were expecting.

This year is a foregone conclusion. May as well get some additional lottery tickets for 2013/2014. Wheeler has the tools to be a star and can be ready in 2013.

That's likely not going to happen b/c Broxton isn't that valuable. Anyone who has been paying attention to the numbers realizes that some of his success has been because of smoke and mirrors.

We need more minor league prospects because we can then use those prospects to create a viable package for a ML starter.

Stockpile as much minor league talent as possible and then move it. We've done a nice job of the former and a terrible job of the latter, which might well be the failing that gets DM fired.

So did Lamb and Montgomery. Wheeler is in AA. He may be ready 2013, but not until June or July.
