Stone Temple Pilots fire lead singer

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS
FIRE Lead Singer
Scott Weiland
BREAKING NEWS
Stone Temple Pilots has unceremoniously FIRED its lead singer Scott Weiland ... who's been the face of the seminal rock band for 20 years.

The group released an ominously curt statement today, saying, "Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland." They don't give any further explanation.

It's pretty shocking for several reasons ... the main being Weiland has been a core member of the group since it came together in 1986. His voice has become synonymous with STP's sound ... on hits like "Plush," "Sour Girl," and "Sex Type Thing."

Another reason this came out of nowhere ... Weiland denied rumors he was leaving the band just yesterday, telling Rolling Stone, "STP has not broken up. I haven't quit. I haven't been fired."

Rumors of a split began a couple of months ago when Slash said STP had fired Weiland.

STP reformed in 2008 after a 5-year hiatus and toured through last year -- but apparently it hasn't been working out.

So far, it's unclear who STP has in mind to replace Weiland ... if anyone.

Weiland is set to launch a solo tour next month.

Hey Dane, whatever happened to that Rockstar Supernova show on CBS? My wife and I really enjoyed that season with Tommy Lee and Newsted.

The first season was a success but people cared about INXS. They had a huge worldwide following but they chose the wrong guy. Everyone knew he was an alcoholic mess before he even auditioned for the show but they chose him anyway. It lasted one tour.

So, Mark Burnett (yes, Survivor's Mark Burnett) went back to the drawing board. They tried to get Van Halen but Eddie was strung out on Meth at the time. They tried to get a few other bands but everyone said no. So, they came up with the idea of "Rockstar Supernova".

Well, it was bad in theory and bad in execution. They had initially signed Butch Walker to produce, who is a phenomenal singer, musician and multi-platinum producer. But after just one episode, it was clear this was a cluster****.

Butch was never on set again, the contestants weak and whether you believe it or not, Lukas was chosen before the actual competition, which is why they released a fully produced 10 song CD with him singing less than a week after the show wrapped.

It'll be years before something like that is ever produced for a major network again, if ever.

I attend MU right now where I'm earning a BA : Sociology major, Journalism minor. I'll always do something I like.

I work very hard in an unconventional way; I'm already a success on some levels, in my (and many other people's) eyes, first by surviving...second, by continuing to smile. I like my life already, and am having a good time. My daughter loves me; I just bought her her first guitar, she's 4 1/2 and loves music (Dixie Chicks, The Beatles, and White Stripes are her faves. And the O Brother sndtrk)...everything on top of all this is gravy. We play out damn near every weekend, and that also part of what is taking so long to get the record done.

It's not a be-all, end-all for me to 'make it' by solely playing music; I iust figure to give it one real shot before I'm too old. Rather regret something I did, than something I didn't do* (I think the Butthole Surfers said that.)

that being said, I respect your opinion as someone with industry experience and also simply as a person who loves music, so I appreciate any and all feedback.

So many people, even at my age, have become so jaded that they quit being actual fans of music, so that's just sad. I don't ever want to be that guy...

I'm a music fan, first a foremost.

I heard rumor of a KISS:Rockstar in which Paul and Gene would pick their own replacements for the KISS brand, and 'retire', but it seemed farfetched.

I just remembered feeling real embarrassed for both Gilbey and Navarro, who seemed real awkward. Newstead pulled out on the tour and was teplaced by Johnny Colt for the live dates, right?? Total cluster****...

Hey, they could've been my generation's Zeppelin...but could neve quit shooting themselves in the foot. Firing Marc in '97, firing Ed in '06 (and Marc quitting AGAIN)...they just could never keep it together.

As an aside to the GN'R/Crowes connection, rumor has it that Marc was rumored to be a candidate to replace Izzy, but chose the Crowes gig instead. Marc also plays uncredited on Somebody's Knockin' and did the bong intro to Train Tracks on JuJu Hounds.

The Sweet Pickle Salad sessions from that era are AMAZING.

INteresting info. Thanks. Too bad, like i said, i dug the show, even if it was rigged. I thought Lukas was a bad fit, but whatever....sounds like the band was a bad fit from the start.

I could totally see them doing that. I hate to admit it, but I'd probably watch it, too.

I thought they were going to be the biggest band in the world after the "Southern Harmony..." album came out. I think your assessment is on the money.

That first JuJu Hounds album was solid. I need to find that again.

Yea, those first two Crowes albums were awesome. I never listened to much past Amorica.

Southern Harmony changed my freaking life.

JuJu Hounds also get frequent rotation - all of Izzy's albums are really really good (if you can find 'em)

Three Snakes and One Charm (1996) might not be their 'best' album (that distinction goes to either Southern Harmony or Amorica) but it's probably my favorite, if that makes sense.

It's kind of like their tonight's the night - it's not an album for 10 AM...you don't wanna start your day with it. But it's an amazong slab with some deep, introspective lyrics and all kinds of instrumentation comin in and out of the mix...

do yourself a favor and check it out.

Probably my favorite live band of all time (when Marc and Ed were in the lineup)

Not so much together.
