Back in the 90′s, the Chicago Bulls were unbeatable, unless you were playing the arcade game, NBA Jam.

In a recent interview with ESPN’s magazine, the video game’s lead designer, Mark Turmell, revealed that NBA Jam was rigged against the Bulls.

Turmell is a Detroit Pistons fan and told the sports magazine:

“If there was a close game and anyone on the Bulls took a last second shot, we wrote special code in the game so that they would average out to be bricks. There was the big competition back in the day between the Pistons and the Bulls, and since I was always a big Pistons fan, that was my opportunity to level the playing field.”

There was also a special code written in to lower Scottie Pippins ratings whenever he came up against the Pistons.

According to Turmell, fights would break out in arcades over who’s turn it was to play. Midway eventually sold more than 20,000 units and was the first to have secret characters players could unlock.

Arch Rivals you could edit the team names in the arcades so it would say local high school teams.

NBA Live 96 was an awesome game. You could play with up to 5 players thanks to that controller splitter, and turn it on arcade mode and push people around. The Bulls were ridiculous at shooting three's with Steve Kerr and BJ Armstrong.

My favorite memory was a game where it was my cousin and I against my two brothers. We hit a three with a second left with our center to tie the game, then they hit a fadeaway full-court three to win it. Nothing ever made sense in that game.

NBA Live 95, turn off the fouls and obliterate the computer. Dunk on people and launch them off the screen. My buddies and I laughed pretty hard A LOT.
