Dyson DC41 Animal Vacuum

Been thinking about buying a new vacuum that picks up pet hair. Kitties are shedding everywhere. I'm checking out the Dyson DC41 Bagless Animal model. It sells anywhere from $500 to $650 depending on the seller. Anybody have experience with Dyson, and are they worth the extra money? You can buy a Hoover or Bissel for around $300 to $400. Thoughts?

It picks up dirt. But, it's got this cool ball thing instead of wheels!
My girlfriend hated the ball version and I ended up getting her the normal style, so this really doesn't apply.

I've owned or used dozens of vaccuums in my lifetime. None of them have come close the Dyson. Perhaps your experiences are different.

I have two 70 pound yellow labs and hardwood floors throughout my home. I went through three Dyson vacuums from 2004-2010 and spent more than $1500 on the vacuum cleaners. Each had to go to the shop repeatedly (which was time and still cost a little money) and I finally gave up.

Since then, I've purchased three Hoover vacs at Costco for $99.99 each. Two are still running great, one's dead. The Hoover's actually performed better than the Dyson's ever performed.

I'll stick with Hoover.

Dysons are the Bose of vacuums.

Just a follow up:

Consumer Reports also recommends the Dyson Animal. Walker acknowledged the device was expensive but said it had an excellent repair rate and did a great job on carpets and pet hair. It also has new technology that automatically adjusts to carpet's height, she added.

Year after year, including the recent years, it gets high ratings from CR. You seem to have pointed to the only down-rated year I could find, which would make it likely to be a one-off issue.

Here's the CR ratings of vacuum cleaners from best to worst. The far right is the ability to pick up pet hair. All red is excellent, white is average, half red is very good.

I have two of the Hoover Wind Tunnel T-series Rewind Bagless models. The cord recoils automatically with the when a lever is slightly depressed with your left foot. It's a great vacuum.

$99.99 at the Burbank Costco, a little more at Target.

I went to go see my local mom and pop vacuum cleaner store to pick up a belt and a new air filter for the Bissell vacuum that is not working. They wanted $100 just to refurb it, clean it up, etc. I've been able to do most of that myself here at home in about 30 mins. The line of vac's they carry are called Riccar. They're made in St. James, MO. They cost about the same as Dyson's, but are made of metal instead of plastic and have five or six year warranty, depending on the model. Never heard of them before. Bags and filters cost more, because you can't just walk in and buy them at Wal Mart, but they are built like a tank. http://riccar.com/

We had the DC17 Animal until the Joplin tornado took it to parts unknown.

Pros:
Outperformed the Hoover WindTunnel it replaced.
Did a great job of picking up pet hair.

Cons:
It's a carpet mauler (a lot of the stuff it picked up that looked like pet hair was carpet fiber)
Poor on smooth floor
Bagless design requires more maintenance (better own an air compressor to clean it out)
Don't empty it in the house unless you like the dust you just picked up going back into the air.

Overall, Dyson's aren't worth their price tag, and we're happier with the Miele we bought to replace the DC17.

Owned a Dyson for about a week. Took it back. Wasn't impressed.

Generally speaking, not a fan of uprights. Prefer a canister vac. Regarding the former, you could do a lot worse than a Shark Navigator Lift-Away, and it's a hell of a lot less expensive than the Dyson.

Clear winner, in my view.
