The Hi-Tech Threat is Real and Has a Solution

May take a bit of reading to understand how these semi-divine giants of Silicon Valley are in a whole different class all by themselves.

To summarize the article: If Google, Facebook, and Twitter are curating content provided by others they are acting as publishers, because they are selecting what to highlight and what to ignore or hide just as any other publisher, including newspapers.

BUT they are NOT publishers and benefited from government carving out an exception to the rules that apply to everyone else in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. This allowed them to grow into monstrosities that have dominated the market.

In actuality, they are public carriers which means their legal status is as neutral “carriers ”which provides them with legal immunity from lawsuits. This made it safe for a lot of investor money contributing to their dominance. This is also how they promoted their services to the public which is a fraudulent claim.

This isn’t the free market: it’s crony capitalism. Nor is it equality under the law—a recurring feature as America morphs into a plutocratic oligarchy. Laws are only for the little people. This is the threat.

The solution is to REPEAL Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act which will make these tech monopolies subject to the same laws as everyone else. The solution is NOT, as some conservative commentators seem to be advocating— the government to regulate or or take them over.
This is the question “progressives” are asking, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but that’s because they don’t understand the Internet, the history of government regulation of the Internet — or, indeed, anything at all.

The reality is that the hegemonic position of the Hi-Tech giants wasn’t achieved due to anything remotely resembling the “free market” – and the solution has nothing to do with a government takeover of the Internet.
You read a history of how we got to where we are today in the link this post is based on.
