Bloomberg: Wal-Mart Raises Hourly Wage to $11 in Wake of Tax Overhaul

Quote:
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is boosting its starting hourly wage to $11 and delivering bonuses to employees, capitalizing on the U.S. tax overhaul to stay competitive in a tightening labor market.

The increase takes effect next month and will cost $300 million on top of annual wage hikes that were already planned, the world’s largest retailer said Thursday. The one-time bonus of up to $1,000 is based on seniority and will amount to an additional $400 million. The company is also expanding its maternity and parental leave policy and adding an adoption benefit...

I am just surprised your not more conservative when it comes to some taking advantage of the government and not showing personal responsibility after you did.
Its because I saw hundreds of people every day at the restaurant I worked at work hard, very hard, every day, every weekend, and not really get anywhere because of kids, or previous debt due to accidents, or divorce or whatever.

My part time job was tutoring. I tutored the kids who were close to dropping out. I saw kids who didn't try, sure. But I also saw the non traditional older students who where at shitty jobs with longs hours trying to squeeze school in to better themselves. Some would have to bring their kids because they couldn't afford a babysitter.

There are a lot of really hard working Americans who are struggling because of either past mistakes they are trying to make up for or circumstances completely out of their control. And their pay is a major factor that is holding them back.

And no, weren't piss poor with money. We were able to put 20 percent down for a house and year and half removed from college, something a lot of my generation cannot do and I was able to get my student loans paid off before I got my professional well paying job.

But it required living paycheck to paycheck, zero smart phones. We lived very spartan. In the winter, heat set to 59 during the day, 55 at night. Bundle up. Run the AC in the summer? lol nope, attic fan.

And that's my point to why I don't wish that on anyone. There is hardly any savings. God forbid if we had a kid.
I can appreciate what you and your wife did. My wife and I walked a similar road when we were punks. And we did have that god forbidden kid you reference. Like IowaHawkeyeChief said, it can be done and you are living proof.

But one part of this needs pointed out, Springfield Mo. isn't exactly BFE. For $600, you could drive around here with a blindfold on and point at a house and probably get it, and I mean the folks that already live there would be happy to leave!

...and FTR, I still to this day don't have a smart phone. Still just a dumb flip phone. I don't want my devices to be smarter than I am

The flip side to this story is dozens of Sam's Clubs were not open today across the country. Rumor is those stores will be closing in two weeks. Employees were not given any notice.

If this is true, wouldn't the WARN act (I think its called) require notice be given? I don't know for sure but I was a part of a factory closing and they had to give this notice something like 60 days prior to closing.

Unless I'm missing something here, I wonder if this is accurate

Sounds like these were not profitable locations, even after the tax cut. I wonder if there were some, of their over 660 stores, on the fence that didn't close because the tax cut made them profitable. This no one knows. Just because you get a tax cut doesn't mean you should keep unprofitable stores open in an ever increasing slim margin industry competing with Amazon and others.

If they ain't cuttin', then I put em on foot patrol.

"10 of the closed stores will be turned into ecommerce distribution centers."

The Amazon effect. This is a necessary adjustment in business model to survive in the post-brick and mortar retail space.

I don't think there are lots. There are some. Having a baby is in your control, and doing drugs is in your control. Many choices that make one's life difficult is within one's control, obviously there are some that aren't.

I would also say there are far more Americans that are in the situation you describe that aren't working hard and are content to be dependent. This isn't fair for those that are working hard. I would love welfare reform that helped people who were showing the effort and not help those that weren't showing the effort after a reasonable security net period of time.

have to remember though that these same people commute probably damn near an hour to get to work, so add wear and tear on a vehicle and gas which most of these same people drive trucks so it adds up to closer to 300-500 extra over someone living in the city

I'm guessing the ones closed immediately are the one that are turning into distribution centers and employees will have positions there if they choose. They said other stores will remain open, and I assume this would be through the 60 days.
