If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

It makes no sense. If a team makes that move, they're obviously in win now mode. If they don't win now, they failed.
It makes a lot of sense to everyone but butthurt Geno fans. He was the best available QB.

If you are gonna make an OBVIOUS win RIGHT NOW move, at least set the bar to something more than a .500 record.
Because they wouldn't take that. You do understand the concept of "negotiating", right? Sometimes you have to settle for less than you want. This is how the world works, everywhere but the delusional minds of butthurt drafturbators.

Adam Schefter (the most respected insider in the business) reported that no other team was willing to offer 2 picks.

um, because Kaepernick has a top 3 arm in the NFL, and Alex Smith has a top 40 arm?

Packers, yes, Falcons, No. Our defense couldnt stop them. It wasnt really anything that Kaep did against the falcons. No way alex brings them back against the Falcons, but he was the qb that beat down the packers in lambeau, i think its pretty safe to say that he could of led the team against the packers.

Their greatest premise - false as it is - is that Alex would have sustained long drives that rested the 49ers Defense, so the Defense would have shut down the Falcons and Ravens and there would be no large point deficits to have to overcome. They blame Kaepernick for wearing out the 49ers Defense by scoring too fast or by killing drives too quickly.
No dumbass. We Alexsexuals as you so put it, kaepersexual we dont think that Alex Smith could of come back against the ravens. We think, because we saw it, that he could of completed the same pass that he couldnt to crabtree in the endzone.
Alex Smith throw

Same Colin Kaepernick Throw.

I like to just display the facts, while you display your complete and utter dumbassedness, and bias towards Kaep. Its not a surprise to me, nor do i really give a shit. We all know that Alex Smith is not elite, not a great qb, but you sometimes fail to give just the slightest credit to alex, or admit that the great kaepernick has any flaws. Which he does.

The reason we gave up so much was because we had no leverage at all. Zero. Blank. Nada.

What was our leverage? That we're gonna draft one of these rookie QB's who aren't even as good as average 1st round QB prospects?

Trade for Flynn? Oh wait he got beat out by a rookie last year and now it looks like it's gonna happen again this year.

God knows the Raiders weren't gonna trade us Carson Palmer so he's out.

Alex Smith was by far the best option and everybody and their grandma knew it.

You have to get the 49ers to agree to the trade.

He must have ascended to the top of the respect mountain by reporting that some anonymous GM thought Geno would turn out to be a good NFL QB or something.

The problem with that, is that you probably don't get Alex Smith. He probably ends up a Cardinal or a Bill.

We didn't randomly slap two 2nds on Alex Smith. It was, in all likelihood, a bidding war and we had to pull this pricetag off to win him over.

The alternative was to head into 2013 with Geno Smith, Tyler Wilson, or Ryan Nassib under center. Or to trade for Carson Palmer or Matt Flynn. Sorry, bros.

And while ChiefsPlanet, I'm sure, would be perfectly happy with Geno Smith being under center on Week 1, it's pretty clear at this point that we were wrong about him all along. He dropped to the second round because absolutely nobody was comfortable with him, and he ended up getting drafted by the same team that spent a high 1st on Mark Sanchez. This is Jimmy Clausen 2.0, and I suggest you get on the right side of history ASAP.

I think there's some room for criticism with Reid/Dorsey, but it's pretty clear at this point that they have been vindicated by working to acquire Alex Smith.

I don't think it's a win now move, however. I think it's more a "we want a halfway functional offense" move, and honestly there was only one QB all offseason that could provide them that.

True, but right now it's May 14th and what we know for the moment is Geno will likely will be an opening day starter which can't be said for anyone else in the class. Based on the 3 rooks that started opening day last year he seems to be in good company.

That was Nick "The Deal is Done" Athan. Shefter is the first one that refuted that report.

That's like confusing Matt Cassell for Tom Brady

If no other teams were willing to offer 2 picks then I would feel confident in winning the Alex Smith "bidding war" with the #34 pick in the draft. But w/e.

Yes, because telling them to sit pretty and pay a backup QB 7.5M is not leverage.
