2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I don't care that the sample size is ridiculously small and that the results aren't sustainable:

Perez's OPS+ is 185.

I am really starting to believe Perez's hitting ability might have made a huge, huge leap last year. He might be a legit .300 hitter in the big leagues, with legitimate (.500 SLG) power. IF he's really that, and IF he has some longevity... Perez might be the best guy out of this group of players.

Side note (didn't see this mentioned in the thread, but SIAP)... Starling hit his first two professional HRs tonight. Would be really nice if he could force his way up to Kane County in the next few weeks, so he can start next year at Wilmington (High-A).

I'd love to see Bonifacio and Starling playing next to each other for a little while (even if Jorge moves up to NWA before the end of the year).

I'd like your perspective on this, too, but I think his swing is fundamentally solid. He's compact, on balance, and quick to it.

This swing looks sustainable and consistent.

We've long talked about how cool it would be to have an "instant star," and damn if it might not be Perez, the least hyped of all the prospects.

I'd say he has a contact hitter's stroke (as you said, compact, short to the ball, good balance, good plate coverage) but the ball carries off his power like a power guy.

That's a great combo for a guy to hit .300 while slugging .500.

It's still somewhat shocking, as before 2011 he was viewed as a great glove who MIGHT hit .265 with decent pop for a catcher.

I think Wil Myers is an instant star, too - and apparently he and Salvador are really close (Perez credits Myers with touching off his hitting surge last year).

Next year is OUR TIME!

Robert Ford thinks both are coming up right after the break. Odo for obvious reasons and Myers because they are going to stop holding Cain's place in center.

Jeter didn't select himself.

Cano said he would pick a Royal if one was available two weeks ago. Instead he picked a player with fewer home runs on the year.

Re: Odorizzi and Myers...

I worry that Jake's debut will be a lot like Danny Duffy's, with high pitch counts getting him in trouble and shortening his outings. They're still limiting him pretty tightly in AAA, though that could be part of a plan to keep him from vastly exceeding his innings (140) from last year. He's at 85 IP currently, which gives them about 100 innings of wiggle room for the second half of the year, if they're keeping him on a typical schedule.

Side note: Love that the nickname I stuck him with (Odo) seems to be picking up some steam.

I think we'll see Myers right away, and I hope they take advantage of his defensive versatility. The scouting reports I've been able to gleam from Twitter (off the Kevin Goldsteins and etc. of the word) seems to be that the D in CF will be acceptable short-term, but he isn't a great long-term fit there.

That could work out very nicely. If Myers hits right away (and I think he will) and forces his bat into the lineup, I think it gives really nice flexibility in the lineup. His ability to play 3B allows them to give Moose an occasional day off, especially against tough lefties, or slide Moose to first or DH to give Hosmer a day off. Say he gets one start/week like that. Then you can give him 2-3 days in CF and 2-3 days in RF (totaling 5), even if Frenchy is still around. That still lets them work Frenchy into the lineup 5 days a week, at least, and Cain at least 3-4.

So you are to credit with the nickname Odo? Nice!

And I am really getting excited about these guys coming up sooner rather than later, especially Myers. It really sounds like he is forcing his way up, especially with Cain continuing to struggle with health and our ML CFs struggling in the field and with the bats. Myers may not be a long term CF but he can't be any worse than the guys we are trotting out there right now.

Given Yost's method of nicknames, I figured it would be Odie
