*.* 2013 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2013! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

**From the 2012 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Obviously not much progress yet, except it looks like I may have slimmed down just a little.

That looks like a decent amount of weight loss to me.

I'd recommend abandoning your effort to lose weight completely. I think your current frame will always yield that "skinnyfat" look so you really need to get some muscle on those bones.

Just my opinion. I'm not a professional.

Yeah dude I can tell, looks like 3-5 lb. off your frame in one week.

I'd kick in a lot of cardio if you really want to burn some fat. As much as you can stand without getting bored to tears. For me this is about 45 mins. before I start to get really bored.

Also no carbs late, like after 6pm.

Also, I'm getting back on this stuff (Krealkalyn), helped me shed some weight 2 years ago, and I'm going on it again. Pretty cheap on Bodybuilding.com. It's just creatine, but I swear it makes my muscles feel 'tighter' and larger, and the fat burn picks up I feel. The reviews are pretty good for it.

I'm actually up 5 lbs....but I think it's because adding carbs means more water in my body.

And yeah, Cardio is boring. I was running for a while, but I broke my ankle in January and after running it hurts for two days every time.

Why no carbs past 6pm? Is their a magical carb fairy that is going to turn the carbs straight to adipose tissue? I'm genuinely curious because i pretty much eat pasta every night after i get home from training around 9pm or so. Lotta bro-science in your comment.

With his beginner status and skinny-fat frame, he shouldnt avoid any macro amd should focus on busting ass in the gym with maybe a little cardio, if that.

You don't need a ton of cardio to burn fat. I don't get why everyone thinks that is true? I used to drop 15-20 lbs for weight lifting competitions without doing a lick of cardio. It's done by being in a calorie deficits and it shouldn't be a shock, but heavy lifting burns plenty of calories!

Have carbs whenever. Your body doesn't shut down digestion because you go to bed! Your body regulates calories/fat storage on a larger scale rather than a few hours and instead it's really in a measure of days.

Your Krealkalyn shit isn't nothing but Creatine Mono with some baking powder. Save your money and get cheap creatine mono. Proven effective and you aren't getting anything else but a nice label and marketing with the Krealkalyn.

Buck, start gaining strength and let the rest be. Honestly, just start ****ing attacking those weights with good intensity. Don't be so picky with the diet at this point. Gain some ****ing muscle buddy!

The Kralkalyn stuff just works, I've taken regular creatine many times and this stuff just works for me, could be mental.

Whenever I've cut up in the past I've always watched my carb intake, especially late. It just makes sense, that if you don't do carbs after 6 or so, then that is like 12 hours your body goes without carbs. You do this successfully for awhile and you will see big time results. This diet technique I've gotten actually from women who have dropped a lot of weight by watching their carb intake in the evenings. Women know how to diet.

But yeah, gain muscle, that is the number one goal above all.

Yeah I'll admit I'm no expert, it's just what has worked for me in the past.

My goal when I work out though is to look like B.Pitt when he was in Fight Club, that type of body. The GI Joe type build. I think this is what Buck is after from what I've read. If Buck wants to get huge then watching carbs is definitely not in the gameplan.

Yeah that sounds like a plan. It's hard because I've been obsessed with my diet for 20 months now. Hard to stop.

At this point (as others have said) just hit the ****ing weights. I'm nowhere near where I envision myself being (and approaching 40, I probably never will be), but I constantly get people making second hand comments about my fitness. My wife's trainer asked her if I "ever took a day off." She was embarassed when my wife told her what a lazy ass I was in that I usually only work out 3 days a week.

What makes the difference? Well, my metabolism probably helps quite a bit. But I do the basic ****ing lifts (with some variation for my personal preference but with deadlift at the core of it all) and maintain my calories. That's it. I'm not the most ripped dude in the gym (though I would love to look like Silock, I love beer way too much), but I look powerful.

The key (to me) of it all is... deadlift. That shit makes you look like a strong mother****er. It builds your yoke and makes you look badass. Just lift, and your body will come along at this point regardless of diet, not that there's anything wrong with watching your diet now, either.

Based on your pics, I'd still keep trying to lose weight before I went for the muscle building, but that's just me. If you need a mental break from a deficit diet, that's completely understandable. You can always resume dieting; just don't make "bulking up" an excuse to go crazy.

I'd LOVE to have a lifting partner, but as it is, I end up just asking random dudes that look like they know how to spot for a spot. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I have always made the most progress when I've had a workout partner. Motivation to show up has never been a problem for me... I actually really like lifting, but it is motivating to lift more (weight and/or reps) if your partner is having a good gym day. It also gives you more confidence to try weights and programs you might not try without a spotter and you don't waste time looking around the gym for some random dude. A good gym partner is worth a lot.

Good for you! If you can lift, you should. Consistency is huge if you want to see progress. It is very rare that I skip the gym, although I will say that I have left the gym on rare occasion when I wasn't feeling well or couldn't focus on the lifts.

Edit: Just want to give perspective... I have probably left the gym because of illness or lack of focus less than one half dozen times in my whole life.
