Gretz/KCChiefs.com: Flowers growing in Garden
http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2008/08...on_the_corner/
His football career began when he was eight years old. That’s how it happens in places where the game is considered very important, spots like the state of Florida. And from the time he first lined up as a pee wee player, Brandon Flowers has been a cornerback. “That’s where they put me,” Flowers said. “I don’t know anything else.” Guys with great athletic ability usually play both ways in high school. Not so with Flowers. At Atlantic High School near Delray Beach, Florida, there were so many talented players available that no one played both offense and defense. So Flowers was a corner there, and a corner at Virginia Tech and now a corner with the Chiefs in the National Football League. He plays the most difficult position in the game at the most advanced level of the sport. There are a lot of tensions and pressures that pull at cornerbacks. Their position leaves them vulnerable and visible. “You can do everything correct, you can read the play, you can work your techniques the way they draw them up in the playbook and you can fail,” Flowers said. “They can make a great athletic play and it’s a touchdown and you are the guy everybody sees when the guy catches the ball. You fail.” Flowers said all this with a smile on his face. He long ago came to grips with the vagrancies of his position. He learned early that the last play must be forgotten, because a new one is about to come at you. “I learned that when I was a kid from the guys in my neighborhood,” Flowers said. “We used to challenge each other athletically. It was an everyday thing for us to be out there pushing each other to be better. I would get beaten for a pass back then, and they would be on me immediately about forgetting it, moving on and getting ready to go again.” As Flowers got older, he started getting beat less and less often. By the time he was a senior at Atlantic High, every major college program in Florida wanted him. But Flowers didn’t want to stay in Florida. “I wanted to see something different, experience a different lifestyle,” he said. To improve his grades, he spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy. It’s in the mountains of south-central Virginia. Students wear uniforms. They march. They attend daily study halls. There is discipline. That’s what happens at a military academy. “That was a real eye-opener,” Flowers said. “I had study hall all the time and that’s not something I experienced in high school. It really made me crack down.” Flowers ended up at Virginia Tech, and he watched the season opener that year against Southern Cal. But he was on the field for the second game, intercepting a pass against East Carolina and returning it for a touchdown. First game, first interception, first touchdown, it was a great start. But it did not end well. Flowers left the field with a broken leg after going for another INT and taking a hit from current Green Bay receiver Greg Jennings. He missed the rest of the season. “First time in my life that I watched; I didn’t like it,” Flowers said. He prefers to be in the middle of the football mayhem, like he was on the first offensive play of Saturday night’s Chiefs-Cardinals game when QB Kurt Warner tested him immediately. Flowers proved up to the challenge, knocking away the pass intended for Anquan Boldin. By the time the night was over, Flowers had been beaten a time or two. He had made some mistakes. He had also made some good plays. It’s all part of the rookie transition for a guy who knows nothing but the corner. “That’s all I’ve ever been, and that’s all I want to be,” Flowers said. |

Bob Gretz obviously doesn't know the difference between "vagrancies" and "vagaries."

I liked this draft pick..
Hopefully while he's getting picked on this year he can come up with some interceptions. |
