NFL Players Union asks NFL to end ref lockout

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/union-a...6257--nfl.html

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- The NFL players' union has sent an open letter to team owners calling on the league to end the lockout of on-field officials.
The players hint that the lockout could violate the collective bargaining agreement that ended their own lockout last year, citing a lack of a safe working environment.
Domonique Foxworth, president of the NFL Players Association, Drew Brees and Scott Fujita are among the union members who signed the letter. They tell the owners that the lockout ''has led to a deterioration of order, safety and integrity.''
They also ask why Commissioner Roger Goodell issues suspensions and fines ''in the name of player health and safety'' while the regular officials the league entrusts to maintain health and safety are locked out.
Personally, I think the Players union needs and mind their own ****ing business.

I don't mind them asking. But I don't really see any way that they can reasonably convince anyone that it's a safety issue.

I would respectfully disagree with this. If everyone knew the officials were allowing the WR's and CB's to "play on"...it would risk injury to either of those positions as one could take an illegal hit that the regular refs would call. I use this as an example as it was brought up in the broadcast of today's game. I don't believe it is really happening, but do see how it could be perceived that way, and open the players to a more dangerous situation.

But there's no evidence to support that that's actually happening. The replacements have called more PI calls than the "average."

The perception seems to be flags are flying indiscriminately. And yet:

• The average number of penalties per game is down from 15.2 to 14.7.

• On player-safety calls, such as roughing the passer; unnecessary roughness, including hitting defenseless players; and face-mask or horse-collar violations, the calls are nearly even: 75 this year, 74 last.

• Instant replay reviews are way up, an increase of 16. But the percentage of reversals is way down: 23 this year out of 62 as opposed to 21 of 46 in 2011.

• Defensive pass interference and illegal contact penalties are up, but only from 48 to 51, surprising because of the hubbub raised on the airwaves about the lack of such calls.

I think the players union should feel free to take some of their own pay and put it into a fund just for the refs.

I think the safety issue is crock of shit. Common sense tell you that.

The refs were never credited with making the game safer but not having the regular ones makes it less safe?

Umm Ok.

I don't have any problems with the replacement refs, as they're just terrible (slightly more or less, depending on one's point of view) If the players/coaches/fans are tired of the game dragging on longer, well, newsflash people.

Too many advertising/commericals is the reason why a 1.5 hour football game can drag out to a 3 hour football game.

Solution? Cut back advertisting/commericals = problem solved.

No, they are not. Its just the fact that playing in the NFL is inherently dangerous, but the NFL wants to pretend its just like any old office job.
