Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

I totally trust the government and their decisions.

I think the firing course should have to be a lot tougher. Atleast make them shoot from their knees, fire from the hip. Make it a course. You dont shoot a high enough score, you don't pass.

It took 2 minutes in line and $20 to get my CCW. On the flip side, I can't get wine shipped to my house for any reason whatsoever.

Methinks Alabama has their priorities mixed up.

Absolutely.

The shooting test was a joke, but a few still managed to miss enough to stay longer.

I need to figure out what they are teaching in Missouri. In Texas they were supposed to tell you at the first opportunity. In mo no one says anything until after I ask them about it. Most have said they were good not to tell officers. That just doesn't seem right.

What would you, as LEO, prefer? They tell you verbally out the window as you approach that they are CCW and they are carrying, or that they hand over their CC permit along with their license once you are at their door?

At the door is fine. I just don't like having to ask, see the gun as they reach for the insurance or find out from a computer search. It seems like that's what a true "badguy" would do, not that everyone would be hiding something, but a likely action of someone who has malicious intent. If that makes sense.

I could see how that would be a sticky situation from the other side of the door. Do you secure the weapon during the course of the stop? Have them remove the mag and clear the chamber? Or just tell them to keep it where it is?

I'm equally curious to know how often you stop people who are carrying concealed but with no permit.

I've had countless CCW holders. I ask where it is and ask them not to reach in that area for our mutual safety. All during traffic stops. If it was more serious of a violation I've asked where it was and said I was securing for our mutual safety and I've pulled the magazine and cleared it before giving it back after the situation is resolved.

Non CCW is a whole different story. Depending on my security feeling I've drawn my own weapon to a low ready position and talked through the situation. IE investigating assaults, stolen vehicles, etc. A basic traffic stop with non CCW and a gun and not feeling threatened its all verbal control.

Im pretty good at playing nice all the while thinking of how I'd have to defend myself if I had to.

I don't know how you guys do your job. I heard stories from the local Dodge police, and I have come to the conclusion that eventually I would assume that everyone is dirty if I was a cop.

There's also good human intetest stories that help with the balance. I mean I do have cynical thoughts but I'm still always hopeful I'm wrong. The day I stop being hopeful and only negative about the people I deal with, I will quit and open a bar.

Have before, I think it'd be better as the owner, because I'd have the right to refuse business. Something I don't have as a cop.

I think just about every guy has had the buying a bar idea at some point. My brother and I still talk about it every now and then. The simple fact that most new places fold in the first few years keeps me from putting too much stock in the idea.
