With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Nope, I actually just pulled up the list of FA's and nobody left or cheap enough that would make a different. Best hope, I guess, is a platoon with Lough.

EVERYONE knows we needed pitching....there were other avenues to acquire said pitching than to trade the best offensive prospect in baseball to get 2 years of a pretty good pitcher.

The problem with Markakis has never really been his raw power - it's been his approach. Markakis takes a very patient and line-drive oriented approach that sacrifices power in favor of working counts and trying to make contact. It creates more walks and fewer Ks for him, at the expense of his power.

Myers actually strikes out far more than Markakis did in the minors (and will in the majors) precisely because he's willing to give up the Ks in favor of a more aggressive approach at the plate.

If Myers doesn't hit for power, it will be because he doesn't hit at all. He'd have to be a complete bust to not be a 25-30 HR hitter. His strength, approach and swing plane essentially demand it. He's like Moustakas in that regard - it will be virtually impossible for him to be a decent hitter without hitting for some power.

If the Royals are honestly worried that Wil Myers will be the next Markakis, I'm absolutely convinced they know nothing about this game.

So did DM tell the Rays this or something? No other reason we should have given up so much. If you are trying to sell him you don't tell them all his flaws so that they can say, "well Dayton, we will do you a favor and take Myers off your hands. But since he can't hit a slider you have to throw in Odo and Montgomery also.

I walked upstairs, had a quick discussion with my wife:

"well, the Royals made a trade, and it's likely going to be a disaster"
"Are you surprised?"

I was making tea for my wife, who is sick and had just run a bath. Got a text from a buddy about this (who is Jeff Passan's neighbor, and Passan apparently thinks this is a great deal).

15 minutes later, my very cranky, sick wife wanted to know where the hell her tea was.

Haha. I stumbled out of bed after I got a text about it. My wife said "Who is it?" I said "No one, just the Royals making a bad trade." She said "Ok, goodnight honey".
