Any bass players here?

My son needs an upgrade for his bass amplifier. I haven't a clue what I should be looking for or the price range. Anyone here have any recommendations or know of any sites that review this type of equipment.

Also, he is unsure if he should get a cabinet and head or a combo. This will be his second amp. The first one is a Peavey combo 75w.

Thanks for any .02 you may offer.

i'd go for a combo, there's no reason to get a head and cabinet unless he's gigging medium-size (or larger) clubs...

A 120-watt combo with a 15" speaker is more than enough for practice/small venues.

I'm not fond of Peavey, but I'm also not a bass player.

I wish I could find one - spent 6 months looking for a drummer and now that I have one, I can't find a bassist.

His Peavey was a hand me down and a good starter AMP. We are looking at any brand that is of good value and quality.

Bummer about not being able to find a bassist. We are having trouble finding a bass teacher.

Anyone know anything about either of these two units? The price range is about what I'm looking to spend but I'm not familiar with the second brand...either way, I'm purchasing the extended warranty.

I'm not familiar with the 2nd website, but my experiences with Musician's Friend have been superb.

That, combined with MHO that GK is a pretty good amp, I'd say go with the first one.

I don't think you can go wrong with Ampeg. However there are lots of good bargains to be had on ebay - particularly older tube stuff that's just not that popular anymore. It all really comes down to what kind of bass sound does your son like? What do his favorite players use?

In my opinion, once you gotten through the "decision" to actually learn how to play and enjoy it, you should go ahead a buy a piece of gear that you are going to use for a long time. I can't tell you how many $300 guitars guys I know own and hate. And then there are the guys with one $1000 guitar and one killer amp who have spent about 20% as much and aren't constantly looking for new gear. Now that might not be realistic...but it's certainly the cheaper way to go in the long run.

Bob Dole has a Hartke A35 that he can't say enough good things about. One of Bob Dole's buddies who has a high dollar Trace Elliot rig has been borrowing the A35 to use at gigs. It's got a sweet tone and handles the hot pickups on Bob Dole's Dean Edge Q5 (with active Bartonlini's) just fine.

Works great by itself for smaller venues and has direct ouput to run it through the mains (and use as your monitor) if he needs to compete with one of those gearhead guitar players who insists that their special tone requires a 1200w amp cranked to 11.
