Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

It was the visual equivalent of an overeager score: pretty but obvious to the point of being emotion-by-numbers. I also thought that they ending was self-defeating. But man did Colin Firth act the Hell out of his character. He was tremendous (and, yes, Jeff Bridges was on-par and probably better).

To each their own. I thought the color change was brilliant. In fact, I didn't think it really did anything emotionally. All it did for me was highlight what Firth's character was focusing on at a given moment. It didn't instruct me on how to feel a la Giachinno's LOST score.

That's a nice comparison, actually, even though you made it becuse you love Giachinno's score and I hate it.

I can easily move District 9, Blind Side, UP and Avatar from contention.

A Single Man competes with all those that remain. (I haven't seen Precious, though.) In fact, I'd say the only one that comes close was Up in the Air with An Education close behind. Though, I would rank Education below Single Man simply because I thought the craft was better with SM.

Yes, admittedly, I didn't mind Giachinno's manipulation. I still strongly disagree with the notion that the color change comes even remotely close to that sort of manipulation.

I could see how one might find it gimmicky; manipulative, no.

Single Man is way better than An Education. Though I am perturbed with An Education's rampant anti-semitism. Precious is ****ing awful; UP and District 9 are both far, far superior to Precious.

I wholeheartedly agree. It's just the only one from the list that I wouldn't mind seeing win outside SM (and behind Up in the Air).

Precious is ****ing awful; UP and District 9 are both far, far superior to Precious.

Can't comment but I have ZERO interest in Precious.

And, yes, Hurt Locker contains very little thematic offerings. Sure, it's a pseudo-tribute to soldiers. The most you could really take away from it is that some people are addicted to a calling. In this case, bomb dismantling. Adrenaline junkies is what the film says.

The film was tense. The film was well made. The script wins for it's non-traditional nature. But ultimately it's pretty forgettable because it offers little lasting effect. Once the tension of the film is gone, everything is gone.

I half tried to rent A Single Man last weekend via redbox but it was out. I ended up with the mediocre as expect Wolf Man instead. Almost had a few good moments and Emily Blunt is really hot but that was it.

Is the character study not a viable form of cinema anymore? That is what The Hurt Locker is. The detailed character study has produced some tremendous film lately, THL and There Will Be Blood included. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that if you liked TWBB and didn't like THL then you are not thinking clearly or honestly.

Few moments in 2009 film, if any, were as impactful to me as the scenes of Jeremy Renner's character in THL at home. That scene of Renner preparing dinner with his wife's character is worth a trillion Inceptions to me.
