Godzilla stomping back to theaters

Godzilla stomping back to theaters via Legendary

By Ace Fernandez
Well, well, well ... look who's getting back in fighting shape.

Everyone's favorite gigantic, havoc-wreaking lizard, Godzilla, is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute through its deal with Legendary, and Toho will roll out the film in Japan.

Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers are also producing; Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will be executive producers on the project.

The last major Godzilla outing, an American, New York-set version from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, grossed $376 million worldwide in 1998 despite fielding equally major criticism. Toho quickly produced "Godzilla 2000," in which the big beast took on an evil UFO, the following year.

But the Godzilla franchise juggernaut has survived decades of permutations (he first appeared in 1954), dozens of films, books, video games and merchandising tie-ins and seems perpetually ready to rear up again for new audiences.

The new film is shooting for a 2012 release.

"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has."

Added Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, "Godzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known."

The two companies have partnered on such global properties as "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," "Superman Returns" and "The Hangover," which have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. Together, they have a remake of "Clash of the Titans" stomping into theaters Friday.

Saw it earlier today

Pretty good movie
would recommend for Godzilla fans as I think it is sort of an homage to the older movies

I thought there was plenty of action so I never felt dissapointed by the fact Godzilla didn't have a ton of screen time

Also, hopefully they dub poorly all the American voices to Japanese for the Japan viewing.

Yes, yes, yes!!! At several points in the movie I realized I had a giant shit eating grin and this was one of them. That final time was pure glory!

This really brought back the memories of Monster Week and the occasional weekend double headers on TV as a kid. Very happy with this reboot (**** you ST:ID).

I thought there were a lot of understated cool moments. And the effects (along with the 3D) were very well done and mostly subtle. It's not in your face explode off the screen michael bay stuff. Which makes it easier to suspend disbelief. At least for me. There were even some good tension-building and jump scare moments.

I liked that they took the time to establish the mythos and slowly built the story, too, rather than jumping right to the monsters beating on each other.

I think one of my favorite scenes was the bridge scene with the soldiers and MUTO. This director really has a talent for building slow tension. I love the way he throws things in the background or at the edges of the screen to tease. Like a MUTO leg or head, explosion, etc.

Gotcha... yeah that was intense. The whole time I was thinking the gaps between those railroad ties were plenty big enough to fall through.

And when "it" was right under them.... ugh.

I thought they were going to make a bigger deal out of the eggsac. That would've made the whole male female reveal a little more organic. It seemed like a bit of a leap to just go to "oh, the big one's female" without that little tidbit about external fertilization coming from Ford.

To me this is directly related to the F-U 98 moment.

I was sitting there thinking "Aw man, they're really going to do that from the 98 flick?"

Then Ford says nope Nope NOPITY NOPE NOPE!
