Winston mad at the Fans

Arrowhead Pride ‏@ArrowheadPride

Eric Winston was very angry at the cheering when Cassel got hurt. Held court w/ the media for a few min about that in the Chiefs locker room

Okay, so in the endzone, field level, where I was sitting, there was a distinct cheer and excitement when Cassel laid back down. I do not believe that anyone wished ill on Cassel, but the mounting frustration in hoping he would be replaced just got the best of everyone. It seemed like there was like a reactionary cheer, then a quiet like everyone felt the guilt, then applause when he got up and walked off. It was obvious to me and I was really disappointed in that outburst. Just being honest. But I also have to admit that I had that same growing frustration and when he stayed down, I felt that anticipation. The reality is it seems like the extremes are being represented, but I don't believe that anyone would wish that Cassel would be injured, just that it seemed without some kind of injury, they were going to stay with him regardless.

It was a pretty bizarre experience for me and my daughter. I don't think either the fans or Winston were right. But in the fans' defense, they did cheer him getting up and it I haven't heard any of the media talk about that part of it.

I don't think that Winston has had enough time and exposure to these rediculously loyal fans that have remained through the rough to address us. I take issue with that. If he wanted to say something, he should have given it a couple of days to better choose his words. None of it set well with me.

Sounds like this is about to come up on SportsCenter again here in a few minutes. Although they teased it as something about how the Chiefs faithful responded.

Well I wonder how much Van Pelt had to do with that... that was by far the most sympathetic segment ESPN has done toward Chiefs fans.

This sums it up for me as well. I've never seriously considered walking away until now. Eric Winston should be ****ing GROVELING today to the media, admitting he was wrong and begging for forgiveness. What a self-righteous asshole.

Darren Sharper on NFLN agreed that KC fans didn't do it anything wrong. But Heath Evans, a former Patriot piece of trash, went all off on us. So **** New England.

Wow that was a lot more balanced by Scott Van Pelt on SportsCenter just now. I've always had a lot of respect for that guy and I was disappointed that he took Winston's side on his radio show without knowing the facts. But it literally might've been someone from here tweeting him that got him interested in learning actual truth. That's pretty cool.

The more I think about this whole scenario, the more pissed off about it I become. I am with a couple of other folks here who have said this is the first time they have ever thought about abandoning this team. And I never thought I would even entertain that idea.

Yeah, some fans got carried away with their desire to see Cassel off the field. It wasn't a very cool move on their part, but it was a relative few people and I really can't even say I blame them for doing it. But Eric Winston threw the entire fan base under the bus and all of us are now the poster child for everything that is wrong with sports in America in the national media and on NFL forums, news blogs and anywhere else you care to look. And nobody is going to apologize or retract factual errors in their reporting.

Eric Winston can go **** himself, and so can the Chiefs PR office for letting this shit go.

I thought this guy on the Star put it well.

Congratulations, Eric Winston. Congratulations on making the rest of America now think that all Chiefs fans are selfish, hateful buffoons that cheer when one of their players gets hurt. It sure was wonderful to see ESPN bash us over and over today, in-between discussing what Tim Tebow had for breakfast. It's also amazing that you were able to make that kind of assumption without watching a replay of the actual play in question to see what the fans were cheering for, and now have the authority to blast the fan base here in Kansas City, a fan base that has sold out (officially) every home game but one in the last 21 years, despite going nearly 20 of them without a playoff victory. If there is anything we are guilty of, it's blindly supporting this joke of a football team with very little in return.
It's wonderful that you feel like you can instruct and lecture us, after only seven months as a Chief, but hey, I guess you're a locker room leader……or something. Of course, if you had actually blocked your assignment on the play in question, Matt Cassel wouldn't have been injured, but of course…..we aren't going to talk about that, are we? We must defend ourselves to you, but you can't explain how you..….oh never mind. I don't want to hear you give another life lesson to us again.
And congratulations as well to Scott Pioli! You have successfully removed Matt Cassel as the starting quarterback without the embarrassment of actually benching your $63 million dollar mistake (and turned everyone sympathetic toward him as a result of his terrible "head injury"), and also successfully shifted all discussion of the terrible football team you have created, to making the fans defend themselves! I know you were touted as a football wizard when you came here four years ago, but I had no idea your talents were so magnificent. You know what? Just keep sending Winston out there for the next 11 weeks with something new each week to accuse the fans of perpetrating - by week 17, he will be reduced to complaining that the fans didn't buy enough season tickets or something, but every week the media will focus on that instead of the 3-13 Chiefs. You'll be able to sit in your office and monitor the stairwell cameras for discarded candy wrappers without a single worry!
And finally, major congratulations to Clark Hunt, for reaching a level of disconnect from your fans that has never been reached before. I thought the Monday Night Meltdown against Denver in 1998 was bad. I thought Elvis Grbac saying "I can't throw the ball and catch it too" was cringe inducing. Larry Johnson belittling fans on Twitter for not being as wealthy as him? Disgraceful. But now, one of your own players called us "sickening", for cheering a first down pass completion. This one tops them all. One of your own players has single handedly turned the entire country against your team's fan base. That deserves it's own trophy next to the empty area by the one, 42 year old Lombardi in the display case, since it's evident that space won't have a second one anytime soon. I'm now REALLY excited to buy a ticket to one of the remaining home games, since now apparently I need to watch what I cheer or boo for, or else one of your players just might treat me like a child and yell at me if it isn't correct, or just say I was cheering something entirely different.
Yes, congratulations, Clark. Fan frustration is at an all time high, the Chiefs are about to go 19 years without a playoff win, and this year's team is just as bad as the one Scott Pioli took over. We will be lucky to win four games. Fan frustration has never been this bad, and we remember when your dad hired Paul Wiggin and Frank Gansz. That says something about the total utter debacle you are currently overseeing.
I hope Mr. Hunt reads the above and realizes what a joke and sham his football team is. It doesn't have to be this way. We the fans should NEVER need to defend ourselves to anyone in your organization. Perhaps you should take a look at what is happening on your football field (and your locker room and front offices), instead of what is occurring in the seats - because pretty soon, most of those seats will be empty if you don't make it better, for your team, and for us fans. Just a suggestion.
