alright all you Tech-Heads, how do you stop an incomplete windows installation

ok ... working on a computer that had some corruption in windows.

so against better judgment i tried to re-install by using an upgrading setup.

so i'm installing windows XP home edition over an existing installation to preserve the programs already installed.

BUT.......

the upgrade installation hangs when trying to install some devices and won't finish.

but each time i restart the computer, it goes back into windows setup mode... which won't complete ... vicious circle.

i want to abort the windows installation and just go back to the original windows that was already installed.

how do i bypass/stop the windows installation process once it starts.

safe mode doesn't work ...

it's like it setup a dual boot situation with the "setup windows boot" being the priority over the existing installed windows or something.

any help mucho appreciated

I would look around at some PC related forums. Just google your upgrade problem... I'm sure your not the first victim.

'The Lounge' unfortunately is the way to get quick answers, if thread doesn't start here it may die... or take days to get an answer.

He is in a real bind with PC. F' Windowz and Bill Gates.

Hopefully a PC techy with experience upgrading Windowz will appear today.

when starting up the PC and accessing the safe mode menu or booting from CD there should be a system restore Option Maybe.... or Boot from last known good configuration...

if you do this it will revert backto who knows when so some files may get lost...

I hope there are not many important files because it could be a bitch to save

won't go into safe mode ... setup bypasses that option

there gotta be a way to abort the installation

if it was my PC i would just save data and format ... but it's not so i need to stop that installation and get in back to it's previous status.

You'll have to put in the XP CD. restart the installation but this time use a different option to repair.

I forgot how but get to the command prompt.
navigate to c:\boot.ini.

edit that file... you'll see the line that has the windows XP setup stuff in there. Remove it.

Let me know how it goes.

Get a Mac...

Seriously, though, on my laptop, whenever my HD was corrupted, all I had to do was put in the CD whenever I put my new HD in. I don't know if its the same deal, but I didn't do anything on mine, it did it all for me.

If it's a Dell PC, try removing the modem and just let the installation try again (or restart the whole process). If it's hanging at device installation - around 34 minutes - it's getting screwed up by some device driver. If you remove the associated hardware, it'll go right past it. There's an OEM modem that Dell uses that does it every time, but it could be anything.

Basically, remove device, let it try and go. If it goes through, put the device back in after install and reinstall the driver for it manually.
