Wife's Resume for a New Travel Agent Job-wordsmithing

I am by no means a poet nor writer. She sent an old resume that did not include a cover letter....no comment. XYX is one of the largest Corporate Travel Agencies. She has worked on their large drug account and currently on an aerospace account. There is an opening for a "VIP Client" position that works all of XYZ's accounts.

I believe that the "Cover Letter" is the most important part of a resume. This is the chance to beat your drum...who reads through a whole resume. She is a perfect canidate but doesn't like to beat her drum. Thus I have tried to do it for her. Here is my best WordSmithing for her cover letter. The details are accurate, just needing how to spit it out:

Dear Sirs:

I would like to offer my experiences as a Senior Travel Consultant (+20 yrs) in order to use my skills to help your Elite VIP Agent position. My communication skills coupled with extensive experience with many facets of travel, and great customer service makes me the right candidate for this position. Through my education and professional experiences, I have gained strong skills in providing excellent service to customers on and off the phone. I am able to greet customers efficiently, promptly, resolve inquiries and complaints in a professional manner that provide quality solutions to phone or e-mail communication and written messages. As a virtual position, I work well independently and effectively with team members.

In addition, I have experience in all four GDS's and expert in Apollo/Sabre database and web-based applications. I have been a virtual senior travel consultant
with BCD Travel for the past 6.5 years servicing the Pfizer Pharmaceutical account.
Currently, I am on the Raytheon Day Team. I really enjoy my team and always willing to help. I am looking for more challenges to expand my horizons. I have also been helping out on numerous occasions the Expat Team which is the night/weekend shift. I have also been on the Tier II Team for the past 2 years. These demonstrate my willingness to work off hours. I believe one of my best experiences was working the Rate Desk. It has been awhile but the idea of International travel and the complicity it involves has helped me in advising my clients. Please see my enclosed resume for details about my qualifications and skills which are desirable for this position.

The bottom line is Travel is my first love. I enjoy visiting and helping people experience new vistas. I live vicariously through their travels. Travel is my life.

I would welcome an opportunity to discuss this position with you in person and eager to make arrangements for an interview at your convenience. During this time, I can be reached on my phone at XXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXX

Sincerely,

XXXXXX-XXXXXXXXX

What are some power words/sentences that could help?

Here's my take. I chopped some of your sentences down, as a few of them ran-on. I don't think most of the second paragraph was really necessary so I cut it. That stuff should be listed on the resume, and will come out in the interview. A cover letter is just to set the tone. I really liked the "bottom line" part - adds a personal touch.

This is much better, though I would add an "am" before the "eager" in the closing paragraph.

Also, to the OP, I might suggest erasing those client names as often times those are confidential and can get someone in trouble.

You are using a cover letter to pretty much regurgitate her resume highlights. The HR department at this level knows how to read a resume and pull out the salient points.

This is the WRONG use of a cover letter.

You need to take the JOB qualifications that they are asking for and address them from most important to least, usually in bullets or simple issue by issue. Avoid soft and non-specific qualifications that are hard to quantify.

You make a simple opening statement in the cover letter and then begin to address the MOST IMPORTANT 5-6 qualifying job skills.

Make sense?

This is one of MY actual cover letters and I just replaced the names of the company's I worked for privacy. The description of my talent is BELOW the bullets

Subject: Inside Sales Manager, Post-Sales (Phoenix, AZ)

Dear Sir/Madam,

After a thorough review of your detailed job description I feel that I would make an excellent candidate for your open position.

Here are your specific requirements I’ve highlighted to demonstrate why I would make a great and successful candidate;

Manage a team of up to ten Account Executives that will upsell and cultivate our existing partners
Successfully managed more than twenty A/E’s in a combination of Inside/Outside team members across the US territory, including spending several weeks at a time with the inside team showing them how to effectively make cold calls and follow up calls to close business.

Help build your team - source, interview, and hire top inside sales talent in the Phoenix area
At COMPANY A, COMPANY B, COMPANY C and COMPANY D interviewed 350-400 candidates, hired roughly 60-65 employees in various sales and management positions including the GM of COMPANY A.

Develop and implement new sales initiatives, strategies and programs to help increase your team’s productivity
At COMPANY C created an 80-page sales handbook from zero to implement the sales process and replicated that strategy at both COMPANY E and COMPANY C

Provide weekly and monthly performance reports with your team
Utilizing Salesforce as the administrator, developed a large number of reports to ensure weekly, monthly and annual metrics across a broad spectrum of KPI’s

2+ years of inside sales experience with a track record of being a top performer and inside sales management experience; high-growth or early-stage start-up experience is a plus
At least 15 years of experience in all areas and always in top 5% or higher of sales, especially startups

Experience with Salesforce, Excel and PowerPoint (Google Apps)
At least 12 years and was administrator in several companies. Also helped develop and write requirements for most recent custom CRM at COMPANY A and can provide PPT slides as validation. Vast experience with Excel, PowerPoint and Google Apps.

I am an enthusiastic, outgoing individual, sometimes a workaholic, who has spent numerous years at varying levels of sales and management positions; starting as an account executive making 200 calls a day, eventually working my way up to VP of Sales. I perform above what is expected and return great results; completely understanding the dynamics of cold calling, various sales processes from short sales cycles for commodity products to lengthy sales cycles with solution selling. In my most recent position, I started at zero sales or leads or opportunities as an outside sales account manager that helped us grow substantially from my efforts.

My responsibility was to ensure that the proper number of daily activities were achieved, sales produced from those activities following a well-defined sales process, new customers obtained via sales then properly managed to ensure repeat long term business.
Being a natural leader at all organizations I’ve worked with, I normally lead the team in daily activities completed, opening new opportunities, and thus sales.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Please feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience.

If it is a big company, rarely does the HR person actually read all of the applications. They use an electronic upload system, they most likely have software that looks for industry buzz words. Put a few of those in places that make sense.

Example: In education we use words like: building relationships, standards, pedagogy, fidelity, backwards planning. I call them BS words. Words that make the speaker look smart and make the listener feel dumb.

This is the part that annoys me to some extent...the problem with using software to do the human part of Human Resources leaves the opportunity to miss good candidates.

If I start to see a pattern of candidates that troubles me when i review resumes forwarded to me by HR I ask them to send me all resumes for a specific time period, say for the last 3 days. That way I get to see things that a cold-hearted software package may not see.

I understand how the mass influx of resumes is hard to be able to review properly and that software can assist, but I have seen a couple of times where a candidate that was initially rejected by the software program became a great candidate who eventually became a valued associate.

I can tell you that based upon the person reviewing the cover letters this would either catch their eyes and make them reach out to you.....or in the case of others, see this as a bit wordy and make it go to the "thanks, but no thanks" pile.

A lot of it just depends on the person who is reviewing the resumes.

Mosbonian-me too. Pisses me off to no end. That is the trend in education. The big, snobby districts here do that. Mostly because everyone applies for those jobs because it is easy to teach there. The HR software filters some out. Then they send the rest to the building principal. Our district does not do that yet. I have had a few principals that have had teachers also read applications and filter those that should be interviewed. It is very nice.

We have talked and are trying to work it out. I guess you take the good with the bad and could be worse. She is an awesome house manager...if that matters. Tough call at 53 in the middle of nowhere. Amazing how some of you remember things about a dude that only has 1300 posts.

Good advice. Done.

That was what I was striving for.

You all make some very nice points addressing a number of areas. I will work on it.

The CP pulls through AGAIN.

Thanks.

Oh btw, I will give an update on the Yellowstone trip. CP was amazing for tips there too.

Not sure this is correct in her instance. She is JUST a lowly Travel agent, in charge of one but her self; This job is a select group. There is, maybe 30 people, that would qualify. There is one open.

That said, I am trying to use the Cover Letter as an advertisement. Then they can look at her jobs/accomplishments.

There are no "robo" resume's analyized. She sent in a resume without a cover letter and they asked for a revised one. This leads me to believe that they will consider her (in my opinion, well qualified) if she dots the i's/cross t's.

I will use all of your comments as ammo.

thanks again.
