They should have just made a God of War movie. They could have done all the same stuff except the main character would have been much more badass

i'm all for this. the only thing about remakes that bother me, especially remakes of old sci fi movies with little sfx, is they lose a lot of character because the new producers cram a bunch of sfx in, and the story line and acting take a back seat. see war of the worlds or the day the earth stood still. just hope they don't **** this up too bad.

Good review.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...04078850.story

Quote:
After an awkward half-hour or so as it struggles toward a visual style to represent the world of Greek mythology, "Clash of the Titans" kicks into action with a battle between human warriors and a giant scorpion. Then it's off to the races as our hero, Perseus ("Avatar's" Sam Worthington), must vanquish increasingly lethal monsters in a quest to rid humankind of the cruel and mettlesome gods who would rule man for all eternity.

Solid teamwork by a host of digital animators, special effects personnel, art directors, hair, makeup and prosthetic designers and game and athletic actors make "Clash" a popcorn movie that reaches back to the fantasy epics of old and forward into the digital future, where the word "unimaginable" no longer exists.

Warner Bros. should reap a worldwide whirlwind of boxoffice lucre with this fanciful adventure. The major drawback, especially now, when 3D is all the rage, is its feeble effort in that department. Added as an afterthought in postproduction, the 3D barely registers. Few moviegoers will think it's worth the extra bucks.

It's a pity the idea didn't occur in preproduction, as the opportunities for real 3D excitement exist in virtually every frame. The film's mythological world has rugged scenery -- shot in Tenerife (a resort island off the coast of Africa), Wales and Ethiopia -- and otherworldly battles between men and beasts that fill the screen with a mosaic of unbridled action.

Perseus' dilemma, unknown to him until the action begins, is that he is the mortal son of Zeus (Liam Neeson), king of the gods. Raised by humans, he insists he belongs with them, but he will need godlike powers to rescue humanity in a dual clash between gods and men and between Zeus and his vengeful brother, Hades (Ralph Fiennes), god of the underworld.

The story sends Perseus on a quest to save Argos, the cradle of civilization, and Princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), whose sacrifice might quell the wrath of the gods, angered by the independence the humans, which they created, exhibit toward their masters.

Escorted by a small fighting force lead by Draco (Mads Mikkelsen), Perseus must travel and confront a king-turned-hideous slayer (Jason Flemyng), the rampaging scorpion, the half-human, half-snake Medusa and finally the most feared monster of all, the Kraken.

It's certainly not easy being a demi-god. At least by his side he has a spiritual guide and guardian angel, Io (Gemma Arterton), who looks like she'd make a hot date if things ever settled down.

The film is least successful translating Mount Olympus and the council of the gods to the screen. It looks more like something one might encounter in Las Vegas with its fake Greek pillars and campy atmosphere. Indeed, Neeson's Zeus is outfitted in gleaming armor that shines worse than one of Liberace's jackets.

When Zeus -- or for that matter any character, man or god -- lands on earth, things are more photorealistic, so the camp factor diminishes. The digital creations are marvels, and French-born director Louis Leterrier ("The Incredible Hulk") pulls all the visual elements together in creating a dark though credible mythological world.

The original "Clash of the Titans" (1981) was a last hurrah for Ray Harryhausen, the stop-motion king of such 1950s, '60s and '70s movie extravaganzas as "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad," "Jason and the Argonauts" and "One Million Years B.C." Sadly, his preeminence in stop-motion animation and creation of wondrous monsters was by then eclipsed by filmmakers who had fallen under his thrall as youngsters, most notably George Lucas, whose "Star Wars" films made Harryhausen's special effects and grainy matte plates look outdated.

Although he paid a kind of homage in "Clash" to the new visual masters by inserting a mechanical owl that replicated the role of R2-D2, Harryhausen never made another feature. All this is briefly referenced in the new "Clash" with a winking line that occurs when the warriors are packing for their journey. A soldier pulls out a mechanical owl and asks what to do with it. "Leave it behind," he is told. Indeed, the Harryhausen world of movie magic has been left behind long ago by today's remarkable digital artists.

Hell, I tried to watch the original and his cardboard acting skills bored me to sleep. Think I made it about 30 mins in before I couldn't take it anymore.

Just saw it in 3d, did not have a lot of expectations.. And was thoroughly disappointed.. A lot.. Also do not see this movie in 3d, it is not worth the cost.. Hardly anything in 3d..

The original is literally 100x better..

The only refreshing part about the remake was a few shoutouts to the original and the fact they took a new twists on the plot from the first one..

This seems to be the general consensus. The 3D was a tacked on rush job. It was never intended to be in 3D.

Save your $$$ and see it in 2D.

The movie? Well, it's a hollow blockbuster, and has gaps of storytelling large enough the Kraken could fit through it (are you ready for this? Andromeda - the woman who Perseus is essentially saving - is in about five minutes of movie total. The amount of time we spend with her is the amount of time we spend in Argo. And yet, at the end, Perseus risks it all to save her and the city ). Characters make some particularly reeruned choices - hey, I figured out how to fight Medusa! Oh, hey, Mads Mikkelsen, just hop on her back and distract her, I'll just watch you turn to stone and be crushed INSTEAD OF ****ING CUTTING THIS GORGON'S HEAD OFF BEFORE SHE DOES THAT TO YOU , but you know what? I had fun.

Sam Worthington doesn't exactly emote much, and has perhaps the most laughable cry of anguish at the end of what amounts to the movie's prologue, but otherwise is completely inoffensive. Gemma Arterton, who turns out to be the female lead of the picture by default, tries incredibly hard to imbue personality into her lines, all of which are exposition, and through this, manages to win you over and keep at least a tiny bit of the hackneyed love story between Io and Perseus believable (thank God, because in a little less than two months, she has to pull this off again with Jake Gyllenhall in Prince of Persia, which might be easier, seeing as Gyllenhall has a personality, where Worthington seems empty without a Cameron to guide him and use that void of emotion to sculpt something meaningful).

Otherwise, you find yourself waiting for Mads Mikkelsen to just prove what a supreme and total badass is and for Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes to just waltz on screen and begin devouring whatever isn't nailed down. They deliver 100%. An early point where Mikkelsen's character (I swear his name is mentioned like once the whole movie, and really early on) teaches Perseus swordplay is almost preposterous in the gap of screen presence and charisma - Mikkelsen is a ****ing star through and through.

The action sequences? Well, they work. It's obviously the place where Letterier knows the ground the best - he adds comedy beats and tiny slivers of character and builds and coalesces the sequences with a sure hand, making things hectic but never making you lost in flurries of cutting and wild camera swipes.

The only issue is, beyond the spectacle of the piece, there's nothing. A generous heaping of sound and fury with no core, emotional or thematic, to bring it all together. Things just happen, sometimes without provocation. There's no real story that was worth hitching this much of a special effects budget to.

I mean, I guess I'd recommend it if you're a huge fan of Quantum of Solace's Strawberry Fields; Arterton just has that sort of smirking tone naturally, it seems, an odd thing to go along with a voice that's the definition of sultry, and it serves her well. I'd recommend it if you really really enjoy Mads Mikkelsen making every other mortal male in the movie look like they're at amateur hour; and, if you're willing to only put up with 10, 15 minutes of Neeson and Fiennes (specifically Fiennes doing Lord of the Underworld with Voldemort's voice), you could definitely see it for them. You could even see it for just the action sequences, although the Kraken sequence is over far too quickly. But they're not enough to give a whole-hearted recommendation whatsoever. You'll walk out, forget the movie existed for the most part, and move on with your life. It's a light snack of a movie.

As for what's going on with the vast majority of screenwriters today: studios don't care about stories, they're looking for a sellable concept or a situation that can be squeezed into a two and a half minute trailer and thirty second TV spots to hit the maximum for the demographic they're aiming for. Beyond that, they could give a damn if the story's anywhere to be found. As soon as your ass is in that seat, their job is done, and they hope they've just got you enough to make you buy the DVD four months from now.

Quentin Tarantino said this on The Treatment back when he went on it for Death Proof: America used to be the best at storytelling. While the rest of the world were maybe better at minutiae or cinematography or characters or dialogue, the place where the stories were told the best were in America. Somewhere along the way, towards the end of the 70s, we began to lose our grip on that and now the American market is primarily pushed by situational films and properties, where the audience is given everything they need to know by the end of the first ten or fifteen minutes and the entire rest of the movie is simply feeding off of that and not adding anything new to that initial situation
