If not #1, where?

The draftniks keep saying that Geno Smith isn't worth the #1 pick.
None of them say he isn't the top QB in the class though.
If we don't take him at #1 how far is he realistically going to fall?

I see no scenario where he falls out of the Top 10.

So if he's the top QB in a weak class...
QB is our biggest need...
And he's gonna go Top 10 anyway...

Why not at #1?

Am I wrong to say he won't fall out of the Top 10?

Discuss...

Well, he's quite a bit shorter and not as physically sturdy. That doesn't mean that he won't have a nice career but it should be somewhat of a concern, however mild.

Eli played for a bad school because it's the school his father attended. Once again, less than average coaching coupled with weak talent made him appear "worse" than he was, even though he absolutely deserved to be the #1 overall pick.

As far as this class is concerned, I've seen very good and very bad from Barkley. I've only seen poor games from Smith. I saw an Arkansas game or two in 2011 in which Wilson was money, then saw him in 2012 when he wasn't even close.

I believe this is why the talking heads haven't pinpointed a single guy from this class: None of them really pass the casual eye test.

Hopefully, The Combine will provide answers.
Yeah and I mean lets be honest, how many QB's are there that can win big in the NFL without significant talent around them? 3?

Guys like Eli, Ryan, Rivers, etc. all have pretty great talent around them.

Seems its not just the QB, but alot of it is just situation. All things have to be right. The QB obviously has to be talented, but it has to be the right system for him, he has to have the right coaching (which we seem to have). It's just a multitude of things.

If's he's really 6'2, that's not a major problem. If he comes out at the combine and he's 6'1, that's another story.

That's going to be one of the things that hurts Aaron Murray next year.

I watched Barkley quite a bit this year, I tend to think his arm strength questions are a little overblown. He doesn't have a launcher by any means and he obviously now has health questions, but it's not bad.

I've "heard" he's closer to 6'1.

I've never understood why the players allow themselves to be misrepresented physically, especially knowing that everyone will eventually find out.

IMO, he's perfect for the traditional WCO.

However, I've read that Reid runs his own version, which includes more down-field passing, so I'm not sure if he's a perfect fit.

I'm sure people will say, "oh, Russell Wilson is short too, it's not big deal"

Well, Barkley's a much different type player than Wilson.

Yeah, thats actually a reason I'm big on the Geno bandwagon. I think he fits the offense pretty perfectly, with what Reid wants to do.

WV's defense really ****ed Geno over. If they had won a few more games (because 47ppg isn't enough) there wouldn't be much debate over who was top prospect.

Something similar could probably be said about Wilson.

That's part of why I have him 3rd behind Smith and Wilson. Size as well.

But if the team rated him #1, I'd have a hard time arguing against them. I'll believe they're smarter than I am until they prove otherwise.

I think if you flipped Geno's 2011 season, with his 2012 season, things would be alot different.

I think if you flipped his 2011 bowl game with his 2012, it sure would be. Weather did him no favors in the pinstripe this year.

i'm all about thresholds....does a guy pass 'some' level of talent at which you could hypothetically build a championship team around him?

for some, it's 'easy': Brady, Manning, Rothleswhatever, Rodgers, presumably Luck

for some it requires more work: Eli, Brees

for some it requires a lot, but they can get there: Flacco, Ryan (broke the seal)

then there is Bradford, Stafford...major ?'s but still with the realm of imagination

but I'd draft ANY of them (in retrospect, obviously)...i'm not concerned with how much work it will take, only that is possible (and not in a Dilfer way)

if you sit around waiting for Luck, you'll be sitting around forever (Chiefs!)...that attitude drives me crazy...you can't win (or even get lucky) if you don't try

and so I would without hesitation draft wilson/smith/barkley...

No and it's somewhat ironic that Nassib is getting built up after having his bowl performance.

I'm just not big on Nassib, btw. They opened the offense up for him early in the year, they lost alot, decided to run the ball alot and take it out of his hands and started winning. Basically, making him a game manager.

It seems like when new Gm's and HC's happen, they obviously want to build the team their way. I like that Reid isnt' going full Pioli and forcing things his way, but I do think you have to start by building around the QB. The whole build then try and get a Qb, doesn't work.
