KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Google appears to be delaying the launch of its promised ultra-fast Internet service in Kansas City, Kan.

The company announced more than a year ago that it was giving Kansas City, Kan., Google Fiber and that residents there could start signing up in late 2011.

Kansas City, Kan., was chosen from among 1,100 communities vying for the company to test its network. The search giant plans to stretch fiber-optic cables directly to homes and offer Internet speeds 100 times faster than common broadband.

But that timetable changed recently when Google said it would run fiber-optic lines to homes by the end of June.

The Kansas City Star reports the company says now that's pushed back to sometime this summer, and Google isn't elaborating or offering any explanations.

couldn't/shouldn't they be building stuff and laying fiber while polishing the product?

My understanding is that they ran into a huge issue on where the fiber line should be hung/laid. Google intended for the lines to be hung from utility poles, but the city/county stepped in and said "Wait, those are our poles. We think you should be paying a fee to hang them there." And it's bounced back and forth ever since.
