BIG 12 AND SEC PLAY EACH OTHER

The inaugural Big 12/SEC Challenge was announced Tuesday with a schedule of 10 men’s basketball games to be played this fall.

All 10 of the Big 12’s teams and 10 of the SEC’s 14 schools will play in the annual event, which will be called the SEC/Big 12 Challenge in 2014. Arkansas, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee will not play in the first year. ESPN will broadcast all 10 games across its networks. Times and TV channels will be announced later.
Eight of the 10 games this year will be played at home sites — including KU at Florida, which was previously announced, West Virginia at Missouri and Mississippi at Kansas State. The other two matchups will be played at neutral sites.

• West Virginia at Missouri
• Mississippi at Kansas State
• TCU at Mississippi State

• Kentucky vs. Baylor at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas
Tuesday, December 10
• Kansas at Florida
Saturday, December 21
• Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma in Houston

That's kinda the conundrum. There are 2 types of schools elites play: "name" schools normally in a desirious locale, and dogcrap. Schools like Mizzou fit between that so they don't provide the huge national stage or recruiting exposure , but they also won't take a 1-way ticket to Lawrence for a beatdown and a paycheck. So where do you go from there?


Essentially the only two arrangements they'd take would be a home and home, or a neutral site. Since neither remotely works for KU, what's the point?

“We miss Missouri … Without question … For the immediate future, for both programs, there is something missing — for the immediate future,” Kansas coach Bill Self said Thursday in his office. “But from our standpoint, they’re not part of our long-term future. And we’re not part of their long-term future.”

“My opinion is still the exact same it was a year ago, and it’s not a hatred opinion,” Self said. “It’s just like, ‘Hey, you took your ball and went and played with somebody else. We’re not just standing on the sidelines waiting to play with you. We’ve got other people we can play.’”

As for down the road?

“Maybe the next coach may see it differently, or maybe the next chancellor, or maybe the next athletic director,” Self said, “because time does have a way of soothing some things.”

But even as time might ease tensions, it also might foster apathy.

“Nobody’s going to view it as a great rivalry five years from now; nobody’s going to view it as a rivalry 10 years from now,” Self said. “There will be somebody else who will emerge in some way, shape or form that kind of fills that role for both programs.

“And it may not ever get to the level that the Kansas-Missouri deal got to. It probably won’t. I don’t see how it can. But it’s still going to be somebody else.”

Everyone realizes this is how they will eventually get MU vs KU back on the schedule. Expect it in the "rotation" after a few years
