Good deal that he signed with the Redskins. Marty is about the only coach who would be dumb enough to sign him. He is a great guy from everything I have read, but he will never be more than back-up material, and not even really good at that.

This what coaches that move from one team to another do. Parcells brought in players from New England when he landed in NY. VD is bringing in as many ex-Rams as he can get his hammys on. Marty going after ex-Chiefs.

Bennett?
I know a lot of people have faith that Marty still has what it takes, but I have NO clue why Marty would want Mr. -1 yard/carry average Bennett for.
Yeah, he had a decent 1999, but he was worse than useless in 2000. All he did was suck playing time away from Moreau or Cloud. Now, we've got 2 still semi-invisible backs on our team and Bennett's production (or lack thereun) seemed to come at the worst possible times in game situations when we absolutely needed a run, he was guaranteed not to even make it back to the line of scrimmage. (sighs deeply)

I never found much use for Bennett at all. His work ethic was fine, but his performance on the field was less than steller. He couldn't hit the holes fast enough to make any gains.
That said, I think Marty is bringing in people who know his "system" and how he wants the team to run. Kinda of putting in player-coaches within the roster to bring the team up to speed. Not a bad plan, if he has the talent out there to perform. We shall see... Last edited by TheFly; 05-04-2001 at 11:27 PM.. |

Marty had to sign Bennett. Otherwise Jimmy Raye's offense, the one where he throws screens to Bennett for 2 yards and then hands off to Bennett on 3rd and 8, could never be complete.

Bennett is a solid FB that can pound the ball. No, he is NOT starting RB material - but remember how effective he was lead-blocking for Allen? Remember how he used to churn out TOUGH yards in the 4th quarter - when everyone knew we were going to run right at them?
Donnell is a good football player who was incorrectly utilized in KC. Just one of the MANY IMO - almost all of which were RBs (both HB and FB)

HC,
Actually, I always thought Bennett fell short on the tough yards in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters. The easy yards are in the 4th quarter, when the defense has been worn down. |
