CHIEFS PLAYERS RANK AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN NFL EUROPE

CHIEFS PLAYERS RANK AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS IN NFL EUROPE
May 05, 2005, 4:14:36 AM

The Chiefs hosted a rookie camp last weekend to gain a glimpse of potential future performers for Kansas City. While watching tapes of the activity at the practice facility, the coaches also found time to view four NFL Europe games that featured Chiefs in leading roles. Kansas City allocated 13 players to NFL Europe this spring as they continue to use the league to develop future players. Included in that group are four players who rank among the league leaders.

RB McKenzie Smith has played in five games (three starts) for Amsterdam, splitting time with Tennessee RB Jarrett Payton. Smith ranks second in the league with 68 carries for 355 yards (5.2 avg.) with two scores. He carried the ball 17 times for 133 yards (7.8 avg.) with a 56-yard touchdown run vs. Berlin (4/16). Smith has accumulated 390 total yards from scrimmage in 2005, ranking third in the league.

A quick look at the Admirals defensive sheet shows yet another Chiefs player at the top of the page. S Scott Connot has started all five games at safety for Amsterdam, leading the club with 32 tackles (28 solo) and four passes defensed. He led the club with seven tackles, one pass defensed and a fumble recovery last week at Berlin (4/30).

“He is making plays and tackling very well,” commented Kansas City defensive backs coach Peter Giunta. “He is making plays on deep balls. I want to see him get his hands on a few more interceptions. He is making very good progress.”

WR Jeris McIntyre has seen duty in five games (one start) for the Rhein Fire, catching 13 passes for 294 yards (22.6 avg.) with a touchdown. He leads the league with a 22.6 yards per catch average and stands third in the league with 294 receiving yards. McIntyre has also returned five kickoffs for 89 yards (17.8 avg.) for the Fire. He caught six passes for a league-high 154 yards (25.7 avg.) at Hamburg (4/16).

The Berlin Thunder are first in the league standings with a 4-1 record thanks in large part to Kansas City LB Rich Scanlon. He is pacing the squad the 47 tackles (35 solo), two passes defensed and an interception for 49 yards. The Syracuse product continued his dominance last week, posting a team-high 15 tackles vs. Amsterdam (4/30).

NFL Europe League clubs play a 10-game regular season schedule in 2005. The top two teams in the standings will play for the league championship in World Bowl XIII, Saturday, June 11th at LTU Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany.

For Kansas City, the NFLEL has served as a springboard to NFL success for a number of players, including Pro Bowlers WR Dante Hall (Scotland, 2001), LB Gary Stills (Frankfurt, 2001) and G Brian Waters (Berlin, 2000), as well as impact players such as LB Mike Maslowski (Barcelona, 1999).

The draft was deep that year for LB's. For some reason many teams didn't take alot of LB's and Rich mentioned he was going to go to medical school to finish his degree. Both of those reasons came into the picture on draft day. His family talked him into trying out for the NFL 1st before finishing his schooling.

Players have options on which team they sign with as UDFA's.

Why do you think KC went after him ? Was it because of talent or they needed to sign TC fodder ?

All 32 ? I haven't a clue on this one.

KC saw his talents and knew he could good, according to my info. Rich like the fact that KC was weak at LB's and took the chance to try out.

I think the fact that KC had the #32 defense meant he had the best possible chance to land a spot on the roster. If he had an actual 'choice' why didnt he choose NE, which was closer to home and they were going to the SB.

I say bullsh*t. How did Rich know we were weak at LB? The Chiefs FO didn't even know at the time they signed Scanlon. All indications last spring were that Maz would return. They didn't admit that he might not return until after spring training. That means Scanlon would be trying to find a roster spot behind our veteran starter and a guy coming off 8 rookie starts.

The more likely scenario is that KC is one of only a few teams that even offered him anything. We brought him in as camp fodder. He's shown enough to make the practice squad, and get to NFLE.

The reality is, no one on this BB would have given two sh*ts about him if it weren't for your ridiculous overblown predictions, seeped in your "I know more about football than you" attitude. His performance in NFLE would have likely piqued interest, making most of us just now aware the guy exists. You cling to this ridiculous hope so that one day you can give a big fat "I told you so", but in the process have painted yourself as stubborn and patronizing, not mention ridiculously out of touch with reality.

Im not the one talking in circles...I shouldve expected a simple thing like logical conversation was beyond you. I mean, we are talking about Scanlon after all.

The statement "impact players such as LB Mike Maslowski" makes me laugh almost as much as Roy's man-crush on Scanlon.

You claiming you know me better than I know myself is a riot !

The fact that we were weak at LB , not only the Chiefs knew it, it was mentioned when the Chiefs signed him. Again, I can laugh at you on this one too !

To many, he was TC fodder because none of us knew him at all, except the few here associated with SU or lives in the NE area. But he did show enought tomerit the Chiefs keeping him.

ridiculous overblown predictions ? Just because I still believe in his ability and stand by that, you want to ridcule it ?

"WR Jeris McIntyre has seen duty in five games (one start) for the Rhein Fire, catching 13 passes for 294 yards (22.6 avg.) with a touchdown. He leads the league with a 22.6 yards per catch average and stands third in the league with 294 receiving yards. McIntyre has also returned five kickoffs for 89 yards (17.8 avg.) for the Fire. He caught six passes for a league-high 154 yards (25.7 avg.) at Hamburg (4/16)."

Anybody think McIntyre makes the roster this year?
