Teicher: Hundreds bid Chiefs broadcaster Bill Grigsby farewell

Hundreds bid Chiefs broadcaster Bill Grigsby farewell
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

No matter the weather outdoors, Wednesday was going to be a bee-u-ti-ful day inside the St. Therese Catholic Church in Parkville.

It could have been nothing else for the funeral of Bill Grigsby, a longtime member of the Chiefs broadcast crew and civic ambassador. Calling a day bee-u-ti-ful was the signature line of Grigsby, who died last week at the age of 89.

“I’m sure if he were here this morning, he would be regaling on lots of topics and subjects,” said the Rev. Michael Roach, who presided over the ceremony. “But one thing he would say for sure, in his own distinctive way, is what a bee-u-ti-ful day it is this morning.

“And it is. We can’t be sad. First of all, he wouldn’t let us be. In every conversation and anything he did, he always saw the good and he always was a very positive, optimistic person whether it was the loss of a game or whether it was a crummy weather day …”

The funeral drew several hundred people. It brought together attendees from virtually every Chiefs era, including former players Bobby Bell and Len Dawson, past presidents Carl Peterson and Denny Thum, current president Mark Donovan and others.

“Judging from the number of people here today and those who were here for the visitation, it’s obvious he had a tremendous impact in this community,” Roach said. “The best way we can celebrate his life is by continuing to share the numerous stories all of us have from our association with Bill Grigsby. The stories need to continue to be told because people like Bill are the ones who make the difference in our community.”

Almost as if on cue, the lobby of the church filled after the service with family and friends, each seemingly having his or her own tale of Grigsby.

As for the weather, it was sunny and nice for a late winter day and one Grigsby no doubt would have called bee-u-ti-ful.

“Every time you looked out and saw it was a beautiful day,” Peterson said, “you thought of Bill Grigsby.”
