If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

Franchise qbs in the league right now.

Russell Wilson,
Colin Kaep,
Sam Bradford,
Matt Stafford,
Aaron Rodgers*
Jay Cutler
Drew Brees*
Cam Newton
Tony Romo,
Eli Manning
RG3
Tom Brady*
Ryan Tannenhill
Andy Dalton,
Ben Rapemeaburger
Joe Flacco
Matt Schaub,
Andrew Luck
Alex Smith,
Peyton Manning*
Phillip Rivers

That's 21 out of 32 teams that by your saying have a chance at winning the super bowl. That is 21 teams with only four having elite qbs by your measure of how many elites there are. I think personally there are six with matt ryan and eli.
Who the **** decided this list?

Sam Bradford?
Alex Smith?
Matt Schaub?
Andy Dalton?
Tony Romo?

Just no...

And its far too early to be putting a "franchise" tag on guys like Wilson, Kaepernick, Newton and Tannehill.

Look don't tell us who we should or shouldn't like as our quarterback for the Chiefs. We don't have to be happy about the quarterback or pretend he is going be anything better than we have seen the last 40 years. We know he is marginal better than Matt Cassel and don't have expectations or excitement that some of you other homers or "true fans" do.

It's on Andy Reid, John Dorsey and Alex Smith to prove it to us that trade is worth it. We don't believe it is worth it no matter how much you spew your Baghdag Bob rhetoric.

****ing prove Alex Smith can make plays and stay on the field for 16 games and lead to victorIES in the playoffs.

You cannot say Alex Smith isn't injury prone and you can't say he is an elite quarterback. You cannot say he doesn't rely on the run game and is effective when throwing the ball 35 times a game. You cannot pretend any of that is true.

I think that in most cases, the reason they wait until the last year is that the player (franchise Qb's in this case) are able to gain more leverage and get the max deal they can.

In our case, I don't think the team wants to do a new deal at this point. I'm sure Smith would be fine with it.

It's not unique as it's happened before. So among those cases where a QB has 2 years left on his contract when he goes to another team, how frequently is he extended immediately? As much criticism as Scott Pioli got for extending Matt Cassel, even he didn't do it with 2 years left on the contract.

Yeah, Qb's have been traded, so that part isn't unique. However, the contractual stuff is a little different.

I think jd is getting at, if the FO thought they had their guy for the next however long, it would behoove them to get a deal done now, to free up cap space and likely get a cheaper deal done.

You don't have to give up anything to find a guy who can throw for 3500 yards and 20 TDs. Hell, Jason Campbell's done that. You don't give up multiple 2nds for a guy you expect to ride the running game and defense to wins. At least I hope this front office doesn't (still) think that way. Although I suspect in the end that's exactly what they've done, whether it was their intention or not.
I disagree Keg with your thought that a guy has to pass for 4000 yrds to get value from 2 2nds. I do see what you are trying to say though. My point would be if Smith does play winning football and increases the Chiefs win total by a large margin, then he was worth every draft pick they gave. I really could care less how he gets it done. So what if he throws 20tds. He gets the credit if they win, and the criticism if they lose. Its the nature of the NFL. Even in what some people call a passing league most teams prefer balance. Green Bays success the year they won the superbowl was because they got their running game together in the playoffs. This whole thought of 300yrd games 4000 yrd seasons is a ridiculous measure. If he is clutch when it matters who cares about the stats.

If the Chiefs had traded for an actual franchise QB they wouldn't be saying that "This guys has to earn an extension." They would be saying "We're working on a contract extension."

I never stated he was any of that. I never even tried to tell you anything other than the truth, which so many of you disregard. All I have said is that when Alex Smith was surrounded by superior coaching, that he showed potential to be a decent qb. And you guys keep talking about being carried by a defense. The 49ers were built AROUND THE DEFENSE, the offensive weaponery outside of gore, and Vernon prior to Crabtree breaking out last season, was putrid. I explained this, pointing out that NO receiver other than Brandon Lloyd has went on ANYWHERE else to be productive. NOT ONE. They completely neglected the offensive side of the ball at receiver especially, until Jim Harbaugh came in. And I asked then, and Ill ask again. Who the **** was he supposed to throw to when they took away Vernon. People mock alex for checking the ball down to gore, again, Who was he supposed to throw to. Then you guys talk about him being 1/13, on 3rd down in the nfccg, and ill say again, WHO, WAS HE SUPPOSED TO THROW TO.

I have also stated, that Alex Smith will have the best receiver he has ever played with this year, in Bowe, and that if andy reid tries to make alex smith throw 35 times a game, that hes going to fail.

I don't understand Andy Reids love affair with Alex Smith anymore than the rest of you do, and I damn sure didn't say you had to like him. Although, that prolly would make sundays this fall more enjoyable.

a lot of you, just have this shit all twisted.

Why would the chiefs, or alex smith for that matter, want to extend right now?

The chiefs have a starting caliber qb, for cheap, why would they tie up cap space that they can use like they used for resigning bowe, and putting the franchise tag on Albert. That isn't good business sense. Why would Alex Smith, sign up long term right now? I know I wouldn't. he had no say in where he was going. In two years, if it isn't working out for him, he can go where he chooses, or sign what will probably be his last contract, maximizing his value.

Its smart all the way around.

They are paying him $7.5M this year and next.

You ever heard of a signing bonus?

Aaron Rodgers... $4.5M

I guess that is where we will agree to disagree.

I think of a franchise qb, as a qb that teams are committed to.

Tony Romo is a franchise qb, they just dropped a huge contract on him. matt schaub is a franchise qb. Andy Dalton isn't going anywhere. and maybe on newton, but Kaep, Wilson, and tannenhill are going to be those teams starters for a long time. They to me, are franchise qbs.
