*.* 2013 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2013! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

**From the 2012 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

You can build a little bit of strength as your body becomes adjusted to the movement patterns, but your not going to build much. If you want to add some size and keep fat gain relatively low, your going to have to count calories and aim for a slow 1-2lbs per month gain.
When I say "lean muscle", I mean that I don't want to bulk up. I'd rather look like a soccer player than a power lifter.

You're wrong about the gaining muscle while losing fat part, though. I have done a lot of both over the past year or so. I've lost more fat than I've gained muscle, but I've gained plenty of muscle.

What you mean to say is that you went through periods of fat loss and muscle gains of the last few years... which is perfectly fine.

I was talking about losing fat while building new muscle tissue at the same time, which is physically impossible unless on drugs. I know it's not as black and white as this, but you cannot build in a deficit, period. Otherwise everyone could be a lean, ripped 220 while eating less than 2K per day.

http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat...ng-fat-qa.html

edit: I'm assuming your not a beginner or severely out of shape. If you are, then yes, you can do both at once.

Damn. I went to the doctor today and found out I have tendonitis. I can't run for 3 weeks, then I have to slowly build up my running again the weeks following.

Anyone have any good workouts to do that doesn't require your legs? Preferably cardio.

Note: I went swimming today with floaties on my ankles and it was awesome, but I want more workouts that I can do at the gym.

Can't explain it, but I love running. I just can't give it up. It's my stress reliever.

Ride a bike and jerk off.

Save your knees from running.

I think I would probably swim before riding a bike, but I'll purchase one soon.

You'll feel the same way about biking, and your knees, shins and feet won't be killing you.

I totally get this. I love biking and I do a lot of it but it is nothing like running. I barely even consider biking exercise. That's not why I do it, anyway. I love them both for way different reasons.

But, yeah. Get a bike. You'll love it.

You can burn 700 calories or so biking at 12 mph for an hour. Even more if you go up hills.

And a lot more than that if you're a huge fatass.

You'll burn more calories running, sure, but at what cost to your joints, knees and back? And what if you ****ing hate it?

Biking causes impotence, and it can be worse on your back.

Yep, MAJOR PROBLEM.
