They do that a lot in the south. I remember ordering a "slaw dog" when I first moved down here. I just assumed by looking at the menu that the cole slaw was a side item with the hot dog. I was pretty shocked when the brought out my hot dog with a ton of cole slaw covering it. |

I still call it pop. I can't get myself to call it soda, even though I know I'm going to get called a yankee when I say pop. I do give props to the Southerners getting me hooked on boiled peanuts and sweet tea. Too bad that doesn't catch on back in KC. |

When I first moved from Kansas to Illinois I called it pop and one day a co-worker pulled me aside and said if I don't start saying soda instead of pop he would be forced to take me out back and kick my ass. He could have so I did. Heh. The fam was at the Missouri State fair one year and a couple of us were going to make a "soda" run and asked everyone what they wanted. Her cousin Amanda said Coke... so we got her a Coke... and she said "I wanted a Mountain Dew." ****in reerun... she was the family hottie though so I decided it was cute.

People in KC call it pop. People in STL call it soda. That is how I've seen and heard it here in Columbia.

when I moved to Kansas from Massachusetts when I was about 11 I didn't even know what pop was, always called it soda. There were a lot of differences with some wordsm, route & aunt all come to mind. I grew up in the hick town of Arkansas City and got made fun of a lot for speaking properly...not sounding like a complete hick basically. "Yer done did this" "are you a MO-ron?" "that them there..."
